Question about oil viewing glass.

Does it matter where the oil level is inside the glass? Right now it's between the 2 fill lines but its closer to the bottom one, is that ok, or is it supposed to be closer to the top line?

I put 2 quarts and it filled the whole viewing glass but I drained some of it and that how I got it to where it is, and I changed the oil filter as well.

Thanx for the help!

I would get as close to the top line as possible, that way if any "disappears" you wont be running low

Every bike is just a little different on the internal volume. Book says 1.7 qts with filter; my likes the full 2 qts.

With the bike level you want it between the lines and NO MORE that the top line.

Ok... I've heard a lot of people saying "don't overfill it with oil." I never have and never will, but I'm curious as to what exactly will happen if I do. Why is it such a big deal? I'm a massive noob when it comes to mechanical stuff.

It can theoretically cause excess crankcase pressure and blow seals. The world won't end, but it can cause some damage that could be somewhat expensive to repair if you can't do the work yourself.

doesn't the crank also ride in it too much and start to foam the oil? that's what I heard would happen in the car forums I was on.

I've heard that, but I think it depends on the particular engine. Some evidently want more oil around the crank than others. ZX-12R's were particularly sensitve about this, and if you overfilled the oil even slightly the hp took a noticeable hit from the crank drag. Seemed weird to me at the time, but it was confirmed over and over again, and even Kawi blamed that issue on one reason one of the mags got a lower than expected top speed out of the bike.

No idea if overfilling the oil on the ninjette contributes to oil foaming due to the crank being in too much oil.

okay, but I wouldn't want to find out by overfilling.

To the OP, just keep the oil level between the two hash marks on the sight glass when the bike if perfectly vertical and you'll be fine.

I was anal about my oil change and I went out and bought a 1000 ml all purpose plastic scientific measuring container online so I could be exact. These numbers come from the owners manual. You can round off the listed milliliter numbers and still be okay.

1.8 quarts = 1.7 liters (1703.435 ml) - with the filter removed and all is oil drained completely. As in there no residual oil left period.

1.7 quarts = 1.6 liters (1608.800 ml) - when the filter is removed and you are doing standard quick oil change.

1.4 quarts = 1.3 liters (1324.894 ml) - when you do not remove the filter.

With a proper 1000ml measuring container you can always do it correctly. Just make sure it can handle motor oil being pour into it. If you really want a "no worries" measuring container then buy a glass version. I guess doing it this way would take the fun of guessing and checking while changing your oil wouldn't it?

that's not going to assure you've got the proper amount in there.

it depends on how much oil drained out and how much is still in there in the nooks and crannies, how long you drain the oil... etc, etc.... so many variables. It's not rocket science... just fill it back up so it's between the two lines in the sight glass and be done with it.

This is one of those times when you REALLY need someone else to hold the bike level for you while you're pouring the new oil in.

Note to self, put filter and drain plug back in and torque to spec BEFORE pouring in new oil.

Your my new favorite. Thats hilarious.

So in context if we put an excess amount of oil we might be susceptible to foaming + drag?
Too little = better HP worst lubrication?

I think the crankshaft has to be submersed inorder to froth the oil. I believe if your oil level is even just a little high it'll still create windage. I especially notice this on the ninjette. When my oil level is high I get heavier engine breaking compared with when its around the middle/lower of the sight. Unless its high and the oils real hot. Am I crazy? anyone else notice this? Maybe it'll change when I switch to Synth.
