I got taken out yesterday....

...but not by a car

I awoke at 4:00am yesterday to a pin-prick sensation in my leg. By 4:15 the pain had spread to my hip and lower leg. I tried to go to sleep, and restlessly tossed about until 10:00am. I awoke to find a red spot on my leg with a circle around it. I went to the ER at 11:00 with a dizzy head and muscle spasms...a spider bite! I didn't know what kind until today...my girlfriend spotted it next to our bed!

Captured and frozen sucka!

Notice...red hourglass...eek! luckily, I haven't had a bad reaction. I felt like **** yesterday, but the bite is nothing more than a sore lump today, thankfully.

Happy thanksgiving!

Looks like it might be a Black Widow - used to hunt them as a kid when I lived in Glendale, CA. Pea shooter, dart made with a wooden match stick, needle, and some paper for fletching.

Hey I didn't say I was that smart as a kid

From the description I thought it was a black widow. What did the hospital say it was?

I know it was a black widow....hence the hourglass reference. I grew up in Northern California around these suckers, but I didn't think they'd be in the bedroom!

Happy for you it wasn`t a Brown Recluse. One of those puppies will lay you up for a week. Treated a few of those when I worked in the ER.

Thank god I live in Canada. Might have a smaller riding season but all the nasty creepy crawlies can't tough out the cold so there aren't any. We only have to put up with Moose and Beavers

But aren't Black window bites potentially fatal?

In my case, my DNA just bonded with the venom...no biggie. I can shoot webs out of my hands now...

On a different note, I just got back from a ride with my new boots and gloves, and all I can say is wow. Big difference between 'street' and 'race' gear. I got some brand new joe rocket speedmaster boots and a brand new set of Held racing gloves for $100 total-kept my toes and hands nice and comfy for the ride over topanga.

FLORIDA HAS SCORPIONS!??! Damn, now I'm really glad I never moved there. I took a trip to Phoenix a few years ago, but I was so worried about scorpion bites I couldn't even enjoy myself. Those pest exterminator signs everywhere with the big scorpions on them sure didn't help.

Gary, I also did my medical training at Ft Sam in 1967---91C(Medical Specialist) Interned at Brooke on the burn unit--That was grim, and then went to Medical Field Service School for my (91G9 Social Work Psychology Specialist) The Brown Recluse is nasty--you end up with necrotic tissue around the bite which turns to Cellulitis in no time. I got bitten by one in northern New York State. They are all over the US and Canada. Difference between the two is that with the Black Widow, one is more likely to get a severe allergic reaction, which can kill if not treated quickly.
