valve clearance

So I finally got around to checking the valve clearance on the commuter and it looks like all of the intake valves are plenty clear, the exhausts are much tighter.

My feeler guages just wont slide a stacked pair of feelers worth a crap, the thin on top just folds and flops, the .008 gauge goes in pretty smoothly (minimal force) on all the exhaust valves, the .009 goes in pretty smoothly (some drag but not excessive) on three of the four. The 4th valve the .009 goes in, but it takes a pretty decent push.

Bike as 11K on it and I put around 300 to 350 miles a week on her commuting. Do I want to take the whole damn top end off to change one shim? Would you? Would you run it another 4-5K and check it again? What say you?

No idea of the SAE numbers you gave but i have a feeling all your valves are tight...out of spec...

edit: googled, .008 = .203 mm and .009 = .228

exhaust should be between .22-29

min spec is .0087 exhaust and .0059 intake so that are either in spec or very very close

like I said I can get a .009 in there on 3 with appropriate drag, the other take a bit of effort with .009 but it fits and slides when in place, .008 on that one valve feels like .009 on the other three.

i am confident in the inspection, the question is do I want to pull the whole top end apart for the one shim that is at or very close to the minimum

I'd replace them all and get them in spec. Really not much more work involved to finish the adjustment.

Just checked them again since its all still apart, going a lot of diff things including swapping clutch cover and bunch of bs - it is definitely somewhere between .008 and .009 as the .009 exhibits the classic pop and slide and the .008 is really pretty free.

You're probably ok...

Stepped (go no-go) feeler gauges are well worth the $10 you'll spend for a"lifetime" tool.
