How I replaced the chain using "regular" tools

With 18,000 miles on the OEM chain, the delta between the tight spot and the loose spot was ridiculously huge. At the tight spot, I had less than 1/2" of play. At the loose spot, I had more than 2" of play (chain was able to hit the swingarm at the loose spot).

The OEM rear sprocket and front cog are in really good shape and I decided not to change them.

I didn't want to buy a chain breaker/chain tool. These are the tools I used to replace my chain:
1. A $10 Harbor Freight grinder with a cut off wheel
2. A random nut I had lying around
3. Vise grips (pliers)
4. Needle nose pliers

Clips and o-ring chains don't get along.

I would use safety wire around it, if not a riveted link.

Or you can remove the big pivot bolt and pop the swingarm out to install a pre-made chain loop. I'm sure it's more complicated on a bike without a centerstand, but it is possible to swap OEM chains with just undoing (a number of) nuts and bolts.
