Removing Rim Tape

My Ninjette is a special edition which came with rim tape on the wheels. Does anyone know how to cleanly remove it?

My plan is to heat one end of the tape with a hair dryer, pick it off the wheel and then slowly peel it back while applying more heat. I don't want to damage anything or leave horrible marks.

Thanks

That's a good start. Heat will usually loosen the glue so you can get the transfer off. Chances are there will be some glue left on the wheel after the tape is removed. Be careful what you use to remove it. Start with something gentle like WD-40. If that doesn't do it you can try a commercial Adhesive Remover or something like OOPS! or GOOF-OFF, but test it somewhere before wiping it all over the wheel.

Don't use anything like brake or carb cleaner on it.

Thanks @jkv45. I've got surgical spirit handy too. Do you think that would be ok if the WD-40 doesn't get all the residue off?

Not sure exactly what that is, so I'm not sure.

Test it on an area that's not noticeable or important.

If it's cutting into the coating you will feel the rag start to drag and there will be color on it.

Typically Denatured Alcohol is good to use on cured coatings. Acetone is questionable and using MEK isn't a good idea.

EDIT: I personally wouldn't scrape the glue with anything. Another method of removing adhesive is using Duct Tape pushed down hard on the adhesive and pulled. Using a wiping or rolling motion with Duct Tape can also work.

Hair dryer + thin credit card or something to slide under it + alcohol

I used a dull razor blade to take mine off, only got a couple scratches but i don't really care.

I've heard plastic razor blades were helpful. Basically any sort of thin hard object that won't scratch the paint. I didn't feel like finding anything so I just picked at it for a long ass time. Peeling as slow as possible and as close the point where you're peeling is key. Basically just avoiding the length of tape from ripping.

Goo gone does wonders on the leftover adhesive though.

I'm guessing surgical spirits is the same as rubbing alcohol. That works great for getting adhesive off and since its on the rim it shouldn't wear off the color. Careful if you use that stuff on the paint or plastic though as it does fade those colors.

It's what i used when i pulled the duct tape off my rims before applying the paint.

I just removed mine, if you have air tools they make these eraser discs that takes it off super quick if they dont peel easily.
