Should I Make My Brother Take The MSF?

In an attempt to kickstart my brothers motorcycling career I went ahead and bought him a scorpion 1000 as an early Bday present. He has ridden dirtbikes for much of his life (though not very recently) and he can proficiently ride my sisters vespa on the streets. When I first got my pregen we took a short ride to a school parking lot not so far away and rode around a bit.

So, should I make his gay ass take the MSF or just do the cone test at the DMV?

MSF wouldnt hurt but your a good rider so you could teach him pretty well.

He should take the MSF because the course will give him to tighten up his skills, get rid of bad habits he may have that you won't notice (or taught him

), teach him how to be a critical rider, and his insurance rates will be lower.

I thought the MSF was an easy entertaining way to get an endorsement and potentially learn stuff (which I did). I even got 10% off my first gear purchase and a lower insurance rate. I'd have em do it

Yep. It was $25 here, and paid itself back in insurance rates immediately. He'll learn more of the basics than friends/relatives usually have patience to teach new riders.

Definitely take the MSF course. It's so worth it even if you're an experienced street motorcycle rider. I wouldn't skip it; the information is valuable. And it's free (in PA, anyway)

Yes, definitely MSF. They will prepare you to die as safely as possible, sharing most common mistakes, important do's&don'ts, and such.
Although in my case they were kind of slacking off since out of 11 people I was the only real noob (everyone else was taking the course as a refresher).

The principles they teach and the repetitive practice are helpful, but if he already knows that stuff (friction zone, braking and cornering technique, etc) then maybe he should take the BRC 2? That's cheaper and focuses on less n00bly riders.

I only paid $75 for mine through a local college. Any chances any community colleges are offering it for discounted rates? May be worth looking into or not.

If he has ridden enough I would the BRC2 would probably be the best fit (less time and insurance discounts).

The only thing I think he doesn't know is counter steering. When I told him about it he was like oh, that does work!

Go out to a parking lot and really find out.

The two toughest things in the whole course are the figure-8 box and the slow weave.

If he can do those flawlessly he's got the riding skill part down.

There's still stuff to learn about safety, though. We all take these things for granted and tend not to think about them. A refresher is never a bad idea.

As one who has first-hand experience of crap that happens on the street you should appreciate this.

MSF course is pricey nowadays but it will benefit your brother if you think about it. The DMV cone test is harder than it looks so with the MSF course, he'll be able to bypass the road test and worry about the written test only. Another benefit would be the cost of his insurance. Insurance companies usually give discounts to riders who complete the MSF course. Plus he'll learn a bunch of basic manuevers and it'll freshen up his riding skills a bit since you said it's been awhile since he's been on a bike.

I have similar experience as your brother. I have a ton of dirt bike experience but had never ridden on the road besides my 50cc scooter I had. The class is required to get your endorsement here. I thought I was wasting my time and money, but holy crap was I wrong. The amount of additional safe riding information I learned that weekend is absolutely priceless. I say have him take it. Well worth it imo.

I'm trying to find a bike for him, prices seem to be especially ridiculous right now. Cheapest pregen that wasn't salvaged was listed for $1800. Pregens similar to the one I bought last year for $1900 are listed for $2500-$3000, balls deep ridiculous. So I started thinking maybe I'll look for a salvage title bike, maybe from a salvage yard and find one that just needs a bit of lovin.

What people ask for used pre gens is retarded. I battled that for 2 weeks until I finally found a reasonable, nice bike. I know I would pay 6-800 for a salvage pre gen personally. But no idea what they actually go for.

What he said. I have same issue with th gf.!she wantsto learn and wants me to teach her... i told i cared enough about her to insist she do msf....she doesnt get it and wants me to teach her anyway. I have bad habits that she doesnt need to learn. I am sure she will have enough of her own. Your brother will too.

haha. It's actually required by state law over here (15%? 20%? on of those). MSF cause me $200, saved $169 on my first year

Yea, but PA is pretty a**-backwards in most of their laws, aren't they? What is it: you can legally ride around without a helmet if you HAVE a license, and if you don't have a license, you're legal so long as you wear a helmet? Silly.

With your temps you're required to wear a helmet. Once you have your license, you're only required to wear a helmet if you're under 18 and/or you've had your license for less than a year. Once you're 18 and have had your license for a year, you're legal to ride around without anything except some form of eye protection (sunglasses and normal prescription glasses do count here, also dumb).
