Nobody to blame but me. Although that cager I passed right before the curve was probably sending negative vibes that caused the whole thing.

I just added a comment to the EFI thread about fallover kill switches for those of you that have EFI. A little safety gear for the bike itself.

Day one: The crash - used the wrong kind of bandage.
Day two: Sore and lame - still used the wrong kind of bandage.
Day three: Still sore and lame - rode in pain to the drug store and bought the right kind of bandage.
Day four (today): Less sore and less lame.

Except for a little soreness here and there, the pain is gone without any pain meds. I have been really tired a lot and have been sleeping a lot. The hydrocortizone cream I put on my road rash is accelerating the healing as expected. This is the first day since the wreck that I have been able to walk without a limp. I can move my shoulder its normal range of motion and pick up small objects, open the door, etc.

I was able to ride without much discomfort to the local Burger king. Putting on the jacket is still a bit of a challenge considering my shoulder. The manager at BK said he wrecked his bike without a helmet and broke his jaw.

I'm picking up steam, but I kept the corners under 30mph to play it safe. I was thinking about practicing some drifting, but with the accident, I'm probably going to put those plans on hold.

The cut on my foot that is at the base of my big toe hurts when I shift, but I can still ride OK now. I'm still puzzled as to how the hole in the shoe was able to line up with that part of my foot. Its 2" away and my shoe did not come off in the wreck.

When I washed my jeans the bloody spot on them came off and revealed that the bloody spot was actually my skin and the jeans themselves were mostly ground away in that spot. The jeans looked intact until then.

Dude, I've gotten some mad scrapes from bicycling. I've found it's possible to completely break the skin and bleed through athletic shorts and compression shorts without damaging either article of clothing.

Sometimes injuries can be baffling.

Its like why do we wear clothes at all if they wont protect against road rash?

Tomorrow, if I continue to improve, I plan to go to cyclegear to pick up a set of those knee pads and see if they have any motorcycle sneakers I can try on. The only problem is that they usually have crap at a reasonable price and if you want the good stuff that is both comfortable and will do the job, those start at about $500 a pair.

Anyhow, its time for my megadose of glucosamine. That's what is fixing my shoulder.

At least with real sneakers, they give you a choice when it comes to size in width. All of the motorcycle boots I have looked at come in various lengths, but one size fits all in terms of width. That's great if you have an "average" sized foot, but I don't. I'm not going buy something I wont wear because its too uncomfortable.

My regular sneakers only need a little plastic around the edges and something over the ankles and they would be just fine.

Anyhow, I'm going to see what cycle gear has tomorrow.

I felt well enough to go to cycle gear this morning. I bought a pair of those $10 knee pads. They look pretty good. I'm not sure if they will fit under my jeans, but we'll see. They have good shin support as well.

I struck out on the sneakers. I did find a pair of regular boots that looked good, but they didn't have my size. He is going to try to order some in from another store for me to try on. I tried on several others and they either were too stiff in the ankle or they were too thin.

The road rash is healing quickly on my knee. The problem is that now that my knee and shoulder have quit hurting, my back really hurts now. I didn't notice it before because of everything else, but its very annoying.

The boots I liked were $39 on sale. I liked them better than even the more expensive ones because they had good ankle flexibility. They were also waterproof which maybe good or maybe bad. Waterproof usually equals hot. They had motorcycle sneakers, but they only came with laces which I don't like.

This is what I wear. It doesn't allow my ankle to bend left or right and flexes up and down maybe 3-4 inches. I walk around school and work and have even gone hiking in them. In fact at work on casual days I opt to keep my boots on the entire day rather than switch into my dress shoes because the boots are more comfortable. If you are walking around and feel too constricted you can also loosen the velcro and that will allow your ankle to bend up and down more

Go to a real motorcycle shop instead of a bilt store and try on some real boots. Buy a high end pair like mine, they are more comfortable and they will come in different sizes. There are different pairs of boots made for all types of feet. Don't expect a low quality and cheap pair of boots to be comfortable, its just like helmets.

^^ He's right. The idea of a motorcycle boot is to support and restrict movement so that you don't twist/break/hyper-extend your ankles as easily. You're just not going to be able to move your ankles as much as shoes, that's all there is to it.

I wear AXO Primato's because I got a great deal on them. They're a good mix between a race boot and a touring boot. They're reasonably supportive (though likely less than they should be) but I can't twist my ankle sideways, and up/down is minimally restricted. For someone like me who rides back roads at a sane speed and is planning on the occasional track day, they're a good blend of comfort and protection on my budget.

Are my boots Perfect? no. Are they a livable compromise? Yes. That's what all gear comes down to in the end.

Sneakers offer no protection while riding a motorcycle. At the very least, wear work boots.

Well you know I'm not very keen on boots on a Ninja. I'm happy with my sneakers. So I'm very picky when it comes to motorcycle boots. So my requirements are:

1. Must be sold in a local shop so I can try it on.
2. Must have a flexible ankle for shifting.
3. Must be less than $150.
4. Must have a flat or near flat sole.
5. Must not have any lacing.
6. Must be comfortable to wear.
7. Must not have a sticky sole so my foot can slide on the peg when I want it to.

Those are the 7 biggies. Anything else I can compromise on.

ETA you can get a touring boot, if your worried about your movement range, it still protects way better than your sneakers....

Might be a nice one, but it violates rule #1 above. Even the high end Jiggle boots don't list any width sizes. People have different sized feet. Both in length and width. The boot manufacturers all seem to think we all have razor thin feet. So far, I have never seen any motorcycle boot manufacturer list the width size. So for us bigger guys with big feet, it looks like it has to be sneakers.

I'll keep looking, but most of the motorcycle shops in this area cater to the cruiser crowd. Those boots look more decorative than anything. Probably not much better than sneakers.

And yes, like I said before, you can injure your feet just as fast by wearing poor fitting footwear.

I just purchased a pair of Sedici Laguna boots which are supposedly replicas of the Cortech Latigo and Teknik Chicane boots. I paid $80.00 and was able to try them on because they sell them at Cycle Gear...which should be in your area. You can see them here...

For me it was between these and the Alpinestars SMX-1 boots. I chose the Laguna's just because it has more protection. They fit all your criteria (except maybe the sticky sole part) so it may work for you. I love mine!

I'm just trying to remember. Its not something I mess with every day. The sneakers I currently have are 11.5" x 4E wide, but they are a little bit wider than I need. In any case, the one size fits all boots tend to be too narrow. I tried on all of the boots that I could find in the store that had flexible ankles and the $39 pair was the best fit. They had size 11, but that was just a tad too short. If they had an 11.5 or 12.0 I would have gotten them.

Thanks. I like reasonable gear, but not so much gear that it becomes restrictive. I think that the helmet gives me the most bang for the buck, followed by the jacket and gloves. All of the above took a beating in this spill. I bought knee pads, but we'll see if they prove practical.

My road rash is healing nicely. Attached is a picture from this morning when I changed the bandage.

Oh, in case anybody stumbles on to this from google, to treat road rash properly:

1. Clean the wound.
2. Use Tegraderm or other non-stick bandage pad - don't use gauze (ask me how I know).
3. Use duct tape to hold it on - otherwise it will keep coming loose on you.
4. First day, use neosporin or equivalent under the bandage.
5. After 2nd or 3rd day, switch to 1% hydrocortisone itch cream (it will help speed the healing).
6. For showering, temporarily seal it completely with duct tape and plastic (from a cut up gallon sized zip lock bag or equivalent) over the dressing.
7. Change dressing daily until healed.

get your feet measured, so you know for sure.
then call the manufacturer direct.

half of my work crew has wide feet, i end up calling the manufacturer to order for them. i usually order a range up and down based on how close they are to the length. then return the ones that dont fit well.

it works out well since they get great boots, and are more productive.

I might be able to special order them at cycle gear. But not for the clearance stuff. To get measured properly, I will have to go back to the New Balance store. I do have a pair of Rhino boots that fit fair, but they are too cumbersome to ride the bike with. They are good work boots though. I had to buy them to take the MSF course, but they use little baby cruisers so the foot position is totally different.

Anyhow, I just got back inside from changing the oil and filter. My baby's favorite - 10w-40 full synthetic. Now to rest my back because it still hurts.

I went out today with the knee pads under my jeans. I was worried they would be too tight under there, but they fit nicely.

Under jeans, pros:
- Concealed.
- Less likely to rotate during a crash.

Under jeans, cons:
- Harder to put on and take off - need bathroom or dressing area to remove pants.
- They chaff legs when I walk.
- the pad material is in direct contact with skin and can become sweaty.

Over jeans, pros:
- Easy to put on and take off.
- Does not chaff skin when walking.

Over jeans, cons:
- Not concealed.
- When knee bent, the top part flips up.
- Easier for the pad to rotate off during a crash.

Those of you that wear knee pads, how do you wear them and why?

They got shredded from the ground, theres a pic in the crash thread.

I got a scratch on my leg from it. I think because I was sliding head first that most of my weight was on my leathers

Maybe your jacket adds inches in front that effectively kept your legs off the ground. So you basically slid on two points, your jacket and your boots with your legs suspended in between.
