You can get it down a bit (but not by that much more). If they can't get you around $5000 or less, walk away.
Edit: Wait, it's the SE.... it may be right on the dot on what oyu can do, but what's stopping you from using the walk away method to get the lower price?

Have you considered buying a used bike instead?

I watched two new gens (admittedly with some cosmetic issues) got for near wholesale at auction today. This was a wholesale auction, not salvage. The only reason I mention it is because the 250 has consistently gone for 18-30% premium over wholesale since December.
In other words used 250's are a better deal than they have been recently, they are certainly a better deal than new ones. |

$5,200!? Holy crap! I got my '08 for under $4,000 out-the-door, and MSRP was $3,500, and the waiting list was a mile long. The '10 MSRP is $4,000, so I wouldn't pay much over that if I were you.

But in CA (where the OP is from) it's 4, so no way he should pay 5,200.
EDIT: unless MSRP of the Kommiefornia emissions bike is $5k?

Which dealership(s) in So Cali did you go to? The best is to go to different dealerships and get prices, then go back around and try to get them to beat each others prices. I think $5200 out the door is high... actually that is the ideal price that sales guys will probably shoot for. I believe Kawi is still doing rebates so make sure they take that in to account, I think its $300 off. I would say to try to shoot for $4700-$4800.

I negotiated on a new 2009 and they started at $5200 OTD. That's $3999 MSRP, tax, tag, title, freight, and dealer prep. So, basically no discount from MSRP. The SE is a couple hundred more, but that is still quite a premium price they are giving you. I got them down to $4500 OTD quite easily. I ended up not taking the deal and buying slightly used.

my 2010 SE was $4500 taxes and title out the door with 0 miles (they built it out of the crate when I bought it).
Actually my bike was bought at the $4299 msrp and they added taxes, title, and fees and it ended up just under $4500 like $4468 I believe. Heck I'd sell you mine for $4,500 you just have to come get it

You should be able to get it down, mine was $4300 for a new 2010 3 months ago, out the door in South Florida.
If you can show up with cash, it's a great motivator for sales manager. |

You could call around to see if any dealers have 2009s in stock. Or a 2009 with really low miles like less then 100 used.
I got a new 09 for $4000. |

Yea that sounds way high... I got my 09 in march for around $3500 brand new + costs, came with an Icon stage 2 jacket and Joe rocket gloves. But the dealer I went to here in NM had an 08, 2 09's and 2 10's. shop around and pit one dealer against another.

yeah mine was 3800 + costs. Sorta got screwed I guess, but it was the only way to go other than craigslist and I didn't want to go that route. No way I'm just walking around with 3000-3500 grand in cash; even if it's only a mile.

I've seen a ton on Craigslst....from 3200-4200 used though....not the one you want or the 2010 SE.....Why go new when you can buy used? Cash talks with people...cash doesn't talk much at a Stealership as they know people will pay top $$$ for their bike--because they are "new" with a warranty--makes people feel safe and happy. What's great about Craigslist is that people have done some great mods for you already....of course it is wise to take someone that knows about bikes---maybe hire a mechanic for a bike you are truly interested in...or if you have a friend that knows the ins and outs...the 250 is a strong lil bike that is worth the money....don't let a Stealership rip you off---and Berts--yeah I hate that place!!! I'd get the yellow pages--call around...tell them you are looking for x bike and you want to pay x amount of money....get a name...call another stealership and tell them this guy from x stealership quoted you an OTD price for x amount of dollars.....now...if you have no cash and are going to finance--then the stealership might be your only ticket or take out a small loan and go used.....used will save you big and if it's your 1st bike---it should be used...
