I told my mom I'm saving for a new bike...
And now she wants me to pay rent. As a background I'm 21, going to school and working. My parents have refused to cosign any student loans so the past year I had to get loans on my own credit. With the job I have now I'm able to afford school without taking out anymore loans.
Currently I live rent free at my parents house. They pay for my car insurance and my cell phone (family plan) Total cost to them from me is $140 a month. I've offered to pay for my car insurance (I'd probably cancel it as I hate driving anyway) and I've offered to pay for my phone (I'd cancel it as work gives me an unlimited everything cell phone). So I've offered to take care of the $140 but they have refused. I pay for literally everything else, food, gas, toiletries, etc. I also take care of many chores around the house. So is she justified in doing this? I know it's their house they can legally charge me whatever they want but is this a morally just action? I cost them far less than what my other siblings cost them (they just cosigned my sisters student loan for beauty school btw) and have offered to pay for my expenses. Is the fact that I have extra money to save for a bike a just reason for my mom to charge me rent?

From the looks of it, it's the fact that you have two bikes already that triggered her response.
Also note, that there's very rarely any sense of "legal/illegal" in a household environment. It's all about hierarchy and big handfuls of dealwithit.

I come from poverty... as soon as I was able to legally work (age 16) I got a job and helped pay rent and buy food. When I turned 20 I was ready to be my own man and joined the Marine Corps.
Is she just in asking for rent... sure. When my kids are old enough to be self supportive I will expect them to either move out on their own or if they choose to live at home I will expect monetary support as well. It may be tough love... but responsibility is an important characteristic.

@Mountain Dew I don't think its the fact that I have 2 bikes already (considering selling one to help save up for my next one) I think its the fact that I now have a well paying job that allows me to 100% support myself.
@Cazper Understandable, but my parents are in no way short on money. My mom just bought a new car. I could understand kicking a kid out who is a bum, but I'm working on my education and my career, and I'm doing it without their help. If I was sitting at home with a bachelors and not going to school then I feel paying rent would be completely just. @massacremasses my brother who is 24 spent last year living in San Diego and going to community college. They paid for his rent, food and tuition. @ajcadoo Stupid response

Meh, the 3 bikes seems a little overkill for your situation. Maybe reason with her. Tell her you would only keep 2 bikes. She may like that...? Whatever you do, keep us posted!

It's not like shes trying to punish me for wanting a 3rd bike, she is seeing my extra income and wanting a slice of it. In addition to paying for school and all my expenses I've also started my 401k and started repaying my loans. Paying rent would cut into those aspects as well.

I think moving out would be more important to me then a 3rd bike. Maybe this is your parents' way of saying they want you out.

Yup, sorry but you're an adult now and that means you pay for your things. That should START with the basics, food, shelter and clothing. Everything beyond that is fluff. Pay your own way and you'll appreciate it more. How much would your Mom make by renting your room out to a student or as storage? |

It's hard to tell from the information given....it may be more of a control thing.
The refusal to cosign on school loans bothers me more than the bike stuff. Obviously you're hardworking and driven to make school happen despite their lack of help, and hold a job. Usually parents charging rent is to encourage you to move out- which is probably a good idea once you can reasonably afford it. But expecting you to afford rent in addition to school, when you aren't causing them a financial hardship, doesn't seem very supportive to me. It seems like there's something else going on. (maybe I have a different view than others because my parents never pulled **** like that on me?) And you should be proud of yourself for finding a way to go to school, and being able to handle both work and school. Yes you are an adult by age, but being a student limits your options a bit - you can't exactly jump headfirst into adult life when so much of your time and money is tied up in getting that degree. |

Two sides to the story.
Ask mom's what the true issue is behind her wanting to charging you? Is it because you mentioned you'd wanted a "B" bike and/or she feels you have enough money to take care of yourself? If both then like Alex advised sell one & buy a replacement. And do you always have the need to share everything with your mom (thoughts, possession, etc.)? She doesn't have to know everything, Momma's boy! Be smart about it.

Car insurance as a rider (as in addendum, not motorcycle) on others' plan is a different animal from what you'd pay as a young adult on your own plan. You're going to school, so I'll go out on a limb and guess you're not making degreed professional money, definitely not experienced professional money (which is about double). As for fair; life isn't. Maybe you're progressing more quickly than your siblings; what looks to you today like "why is sister getting co-signs on loans and brother free rent/food/tuition" looks to them like "Jiggles is growing up quickly, we have confidence that he's ready to be a real adult." Oh, and unless you have six legs, anything more than one bike is "toy" and not "need." I have my two, but either my wife will get her cert this year or one of them will find a new owner. That's the cool thing about the Ninjette; it really is all-purpose. |

My take would be that you already own 2 bikes and it's really ludicrous to even try and attempt justifying a third. And by the way, a 401k is like throwing money out the window, employees get into to them due to "the match" (mine was 5%) figuring how can I lose, but you do in the end, no brag just fact. Get an accountant/series 7 rep. to handle your dough. Also, if you can live on campus, eat some humble pie and do it.

My opinion: She wants you to move out, or just wants you to learn more of what real life is (I'm not saying you don't know what it is). According to you, you pay for your life pretty much, and I respect you for that

Hahahahahha @Jiggles I've said this before and I'll say it again... when the hell would you get time to ride 3 bikes to it's fullest. I can understand 2 bikes being fun but a 3rd bike isnt exactly very practical. 1) pregen 250 for a project bike (ok works for me and very cool to have but you rarely ride this bike if at all), 2) newgen 250R (main bike I can understand and is very cool duh!) 3) ???? (where will this bike fit in? Maybe if you get a dirt/dual sport bike. That'd be cool.)
Also, your mom asking for rent is exactly that, a slice of your money to make it harder for you to get a 3rd bike. It's to teach you that you're probably not being as efficient with your money as you should be. That said, it's technically still your money and your parents were very cool when I came over so I think all they'd do is give you a hard time should you decide to get a new bike. They probably wouldnt kick you out or anything... in fact I think your Dad might steal one of your bikes.

@setasai yea pretty much the only reason im keeping deathproof atthis point is so that my dad can ride it. Im considering selling it. New bike would be for commuting and the ninja would be for the twisties.
@Numbersix I could share an apartment or rent a room for about $500/mo. Iwould much rather move out as i wouldnt have to do all their chores anymore. However i know theydont want me to move because of all the stuff i do and if i tell her im gna move out she might drop the whole thing. I really dont need a car and not having insurance would be a good excuse to never drive it. My mom is a 1-UPing type of person. If anyone buys a new computer then shehas to get a newer one. If you try to tell her about some good deal you got well she can get a better deal. Thatsjust her personalty so maybe me saying oh hey look im gns get a new bike shes thinking well i cant buya new car so il prevent sean from getting a new bike.

I gotta pay rent as soon as i got my job which was when i turned 17 i think and that was on £3.60 an hour only doing part time, so annoying but now i earn more the rent up more even though i already have to pay £100 for insurance a month £60 for the bike £15 for my phone then £100 for rent which doesn't sound much but i only really get £300-£400 a month and i have to fill up the petrol every week wish i didn't have to pay rent and at least you haven't had to up to your age? that's pretty good

Without going into comparing how much more/less your life is privileged, one thing just jumps out at me...You’re maintaining a freaking fleet of vehicles! I mean having a car and a bike for personal use is already pretty sweet; owning an additional dirt/track/project bike is awesome; but yet another vehicle will simply seem like overkill to most people. No idea how many car’s etc. your parents own, but that may also play a part as they might not be able to see why you need more than one means of transportation.
Another factor might be that the cost of maintaining all the bikes, the car, education, whatever else you consider personal expenses. Perhaps your mom is just worried you’ll incur debt, lack a social life, burn out doing over time in a (low?) wage job all for the sake of owning an unusual amount of motorcycles… Perhaps saving some cash for now will solve the problem? If you don’t spend it in an obvious manner people won’t want to have a piece of it and you can always go out and buy whatever/whenever you feel like, providing you managed to save up enough. -Just some ideas that hit me while in a half-asleep state...=)

Stop being a brat. Your parents are trying to teach you about financial responsibility and independence. You should be offering to pay rent at your age. Go out and get an apartment and see how expensive real life is and you'll be begging to move back home and pay a few hundred bucks rent.
