06 ninja lost power and died Check it out.
Alright fellas, so this bike has been a bit of a pain in the ass so far. I was riding today to get the vin verified to register it, and it lost power and died while riding. Got it towed home with my fancy new insurance I got YESTERDAY. So I check the petcock, and fuel was pissing out with it in the on position. So I took the petcock apart, cleaned it a little, and put it back together. Bike fired up and ran good for about 2 minutes. Made it around the neighborhood before it started sputtering and losing all power and acting lean. I got it home, pulled the plugs, and this is what I found. I’m going to replace the plugs, but why the hell did this happen. There’s oil in the bike, and those we’re brand new spark plugs just 4 days ago and I ran the bike 17 miles.

I'm only guessing, bu I'd say the engine is running super lean and the pistons are losing aluminum from being overheated.

what would make it go super lean? Maybe the petcock stopped working so when I was gassing it at 85mph at like 10k to try to accelerate, it might’ve just went wicked lean and ruined the plugs? How do the plugs in the picture look that are after my recent mile ride

One thing I learned from DIY wrenching is to stick to the manufacturer recommended spark plugs. Do not go off-brand EVER.
Anyhow, ride it some more hopefully near your place where you can conveniently push it back if it dies again. |

The old plugs looks way better, use those.
Did you flush out gas tank? All new gas? Is your petcock dripping fuel out vacuum line? |

Flushed tank, new petcock with built in filter, gas isn’t even a week old. Nothing leaking anywhere. Here’s my old plug after a few minute ride with it seeing almost rev limiter. Other plug looks identical.

This things pretty loud (gutted exhaust baffles) and my neighbors already hate me from my other bikes I’ve ridden lol. What I can say is after a 2 minute ride the cylinder head and spark plugs are pretty toasty warm.

No, I would say you used champion plugs.
Champion has poor quality, and bad cross references. Heat range way to hot. Stick with NGK. |

Should I be concerned with how hot the head is getting? Would a valve adjustment knock temps down maybe? No clue when valves were last checked and I hear a little something up there but it runs beautiful minus melting those 2 champion plugs earlier

It's a liquid cooled engine. I don't see how the head can get any hotter than the rest of the engine unless the water passages have a problem.
Also keep in mind that there are plenty of counterfeit spark plugs going around now. NGK's site has a page that shows how to tell if "NGK" plugs are really NGK plugs. http://www.ngk-sparkplugs.jp/english...ake/index.html |

Combustion takes place at the head, so it will be hotter than rest of engine (except for header pipes).

I would not be too concerned. Those plugs melted down in 17 miles. They may have been counterfeit. Motorcycles forums have lots of stories about champions melting down. The usual problem is the reference chart is off, always way to hot.
I have cheap bore scope. When in doubt I have a look in the cylinder. Also comes in very useful when buying a used bike. I have never had a problem with NGK. There I stick with the dealer supplied plugs for my Harley. Someone makes them, but the have the Harley logo.plus the electronics have some thing called ion sensing. Has something about anti-knock. |

Not sure it's HD plugs that does the ion-sensing part. It's ECU that has calibrated tables for spark-resistance across gap at specific time-intervals after coil is dumped. When detonation occurs, it lowers resistance across gap faster than normal, and coil-current increases faster than normal. This is detected by ECU and it can then adjust fuel & ignition for next engine revolution.
Yeah, using those crappy Champion plugs on HD would probably render ion-sensing anti-detonation feature inoperable. |

Never, ever use Champion spark plugs in a Pre-Gen EX-250. That has been the rule for a long time.

Update: bikes running great with just the ngk plugs. Bike runs very good, plenty of power for a 250, and is pretty smooth. Suspension is a large tad soft for my liking lol, and I’m only 150 pounds.
