If I was you, I would cost out a who rebuild in several different ways (oem vs big bore) and figure for 120% cost, and then think about the value of the bike and how long it will take to find a used engine or some other engine swap. A ninja 500 engine “can” swap in. I have always thought about how cool a 2 stroke ninja would be. Worst comes to worst, just tear it down and see how bad it is. That costs nothing is you have the time and space. |

Engine-rebuilding requires quite a bit of experience and skill. Extremely easy to make mistake and destroy engine after all that hard work (~20-50hrs to rebuild). It's just not swapping parts, requires lots of precision measuring and machining.
Look on Craiglist and eBay, 250 engines come up regularly. You can even set up automated searches on both that will send you alert when one comes up. eBay search shows about 60+ engines ready to go. Also check local junkyards within driving distance. There's some sort of website somewhere with junkyards listing their inventory that you can search. I seriously planned a Banshee engine-swap. Would be a waste to fabricate all mounts for Banshee engine and stuff it into such heavy frame. Then chose to build custom-frame for it (with Ninja 250 bodywork of course). For the effort, I can get 50-lb savings over factory frame. |

Are you sure it's a rod knock and not something like the clutch making the noise?
Also, it might be good to change your location to something a little more generic. |

If you have some time and want to learn about "Pre-Gen Clutch Basket Knock" and what can be done to remedy the situation, here's a thread that's got a lot of information.

Have you drained the engine oil lately? If so, did you notice "gold flecks" in it? I have noticed that the more abundant the flecks, the louder the knock. That's how I "verify" the engine needs replacement. It is free, and takes only a few minutes.
Please correct me if I am mistaken in my "scientific" approach
