Won a Kindle today...
Went to a vendor happy hour at the RSA conference, dropped a business card in the jar, and am the lucky winner of a new Kindle. I think it's the normal sized one, not the larger one (judging from the size of the box), but I'll open it all up when I get home. Ann has already called dibs on it, so I don't know if I'll ever get to play with it. Anyone have one of these gadgets? Enjoy it?

I, for some reason, have trouble reading things on a back-lit screen like that. I have seen one of those in person and they look fantastic, though. I just hope it doesn't exacerbate eye fatigue like a computer screen, or ipod touch does.

It's a totally different type of screen from an ipod or computer screen, it looks much closer to black and white (black on grey, actually), very similar to a paperback book. Supposed to cause less eye strain, and it also allows for much longer battery life.

I wonder if you can use it to write? Like write a book with it?
Then let people read your own book. Lol I guess that's what I would try and do?

I love mine - I read so many books on it while w were on our cruise, and didn't have to take up but a little tiny bit of space in the backpack as opposed to the space taken by all the paperbacks if I'd had them! Never had any problem with battery life, and if I want to read a trashy romance novel, I don't have to feel guilty, as no one can see the cover or what I'm reading!

I want a Kindle but the price is just too great. I'm glad to see that you avoided that hurdle.
10 years ago I expected that this tech would be well under $50 by now, especially if the real market is in the books available for it. |

That is a neat device. It would be good for my father-in-law, who has Macular Degeneration and can no longer read. Books on tape are quite limited. Will look into it. Thanks for the heads up, Alex. We don`t just learn about motorcycles here.

/ancient thread bump
Woot.com was running a special on the larger Kindle DX's last week, and I picked up one of those along with some accessories (light, case, etc.) I hadn't been using the original Kindle much, I felt the screen was just a little small, but with this larger screen I can bump the font size up a click or two for my aging eyes, and still fit much more information on each page.

I got my Dad a Kindle a while back and he likes it. He has some books on it, plays sudoku on it sometimes, and it is by far the best Scrabble/Boggle adjudication tool on the market today.

Bought my daughter one and she loves it. Easier on the eyes than my iPad. No backlight, but she is cool with that.

I have a normal sized kindle, and I am super happy with it. Apart from the pc it is the best electronic device in my possesion.
Screen is amazing, and battery life is incredible. The lack of other functions makes it somehow... relaxing. Just like a book, open and read, no bright colours, no sounds, flashy animations, e-mails or phone calls. Peace and quiet. |

I use the Kindle app on my iPad, and I don't ever want to go back to reading paper. When reading books in the Kindle app you can turn the brightness way down within the app, so reducing the eye strain. I can read in bed without needing the light on, and without lighting up the whole room.
I also have a couple of magazine subscriptions - Wired, Business Week, Cycle World and Motorcyclist - love the experience, especially Wired. I still get the paper version of Wired, but I don't even bother to unwrap it anymore as the experience on the iPad is so rich - even some of the adverts are engaging. I'm not sure how the magazine experience would be on the regular Kindle, but it may be quite similar on the Kindle Fire. I love eReading. |
