[hell for leather] - London’s bike thieves are at it again

On Tuesday morning, six robbers rode tasty motorcycles through London’s Brent Cross mall on their way to a smash and grab at jewelry store Fraser Hart. There, three of the robbers filled bags with $3.1 million worth of Rolex and Cartier watches, while the three getaway riders kept potential heroes at bay with an axe. [...]

LOL at the one motorcycle thief who thought it'd be prudent to flip the turn signal on while his buddies did the smash and grab.

That's incredible!

I wonder how grippy that surface is that they were riding on.

They really got away with 3.1m in watches? I know that Cartier and Rolex watches are pricey, but 3.1m! Even assuming that each watch they nabbed is worth 5k, that's 620 watches. I'm amazed that a store in a mall would have 620 watches in stock worth 5k. Actually, I'm amazed that a jeweller's would have 3.1m in ANY stock immediately on hand. Maybe 500k. Maybe.

What a sucky camera operator. Hopefully he was doing better with a different camera. Not that they'd have visible tag numbers, but... geeze.

5k? I think their cheapest watches are like 5k lol. A lot of their watches are like 35-50k or more. Grab some of those, plus some other jewelry (a lot of which are up there too) and it's very easy to get up into the 3 million range!

My Fossil-designed Sony Ericsson MBW-150 Bluetooth wristwatch was $500 in 2007 and I thought that was expensive!

Visible tags wouldn't matter if the bikes were stolen.

Not a bad plan really. Steal some bikes, wear head to tow riding gear, smash and grab. No body can identify you because you're covered with bulky gear and you don't stand out when out in traffic. (Not that I approve at all, and I hope their caught)

@flynjay: I have similar thoughts to you. Stealing from someone's business is wrong, but these guys really do have a smart way of going about it. You should see London traffic too. The only things that flow through the city are motorcycles and mopeds. The UK police have some very skilled motorcycle riders, but I doubt even they could get to the scene of the crime within 2 minutes of it being reported and then identify and chase all 3 bikes.

We do have a ton of cameras here. I have wondered if they could track them all the way back to where they dumped the bikes. Presumably the thieves have thought about that too and chosen a black spot where there aren't cameras.
