Starter motor clutch
My bike made a horrible metal on metal popping sound when I started it today. I cut the engine and started it again. It made a gear grinding sound and the third time the the starter motor seemed like it wasn't connected to anything and just revved up. I took the two bolts off the right end of the starter and examined the gear on the left end and there was no damage. I'm just about to drain the oil, but I want to know what to expect before I take the left cover off. Thanks.

I'm guessing the starter motor gear which is located behind the flywheel will have teeth broken off it.
