Gas tank liner for rust prevention...

Now I wish I had listened to you guys.... already the gas tank liner (paint)
i put in the gas tank is peeling off !
I got 90% of it off already with a pair of long nose needle nose plyers...
but there is still about 10% left in the tank....
.... I have a new petcock coming so I drained the gas and discovered it was pealing off already and it hasn't even been a year !
that stuff does not work at all.... and I followed the instructions very carefully.
..... I don't remember what that stuff was called but it was named in one of my previous posts when I did it..... so stay away from that junk !
.... I am sure the company would say "well you didn't clean the tank enough"
but I followed their instructions to the "T" so the product is a bad one!
.....
I now have paper in line fuel filters and feel safe just running the tank without
a tank liner of any sort..... ( let it rust I guess! )
.....
so a bunch more work because of a defective product !
i'll have to pull the gas cap off to get every bit of it out of there that I can
but that is do-able I think.
.... I just wanted to let you guys know.... you were right DON'T do IT ! LOL
......
Bob........

you only have to worry about rust if you let bike sit too long.

In normal use, tank is on average 50% full, so bottom half is protected by petrol.

With normal vibration and movement, you've got petrol vapours on top displacing air and water vapour, so tank won't rust with normal use.

Problem only comes in when bike sits, petrol vapour recondenses and outside moist air comes in to replace it. This then causes rusting above fuel level. That's why recommendation to fully fill tank before storing for winter.

agreed, Kreem is junk.

I'm actually a proponent of POR-15, used it on my older '95 Ducati about 10 years ago. Still intact, disallowing presence of rust ANYWHERE in the tank.

+1 on POR-15, that's all I've ever used (and it was a last ditch effort to save a really nice old tank). I always stayed away from Kreem; seems everyone has this issue with their product.

I've gotten good results with Red-Kote, I thin it out with acetone then apply in 2 thin coats.

Just run a little premix in the fuel and you'll never have fuel tank rusting for a bike that gets occasionally ridden. There's other benefits to oil in the fuel too, other than a gas tank that never rusts
