To shim or not to shim
So I have a new 2012 with a little over 300 miles. I bought a new mgp Growler slip on so Ivan b heard and not afraid to get ran over. My question is will it be OK to shim it with such low mileage? Or will it hurt more to ride with it running super lean with the new exhaust. I don't want to hurt my bike. What do you think? Also I haven't put the exhaust on yet. Is the beat option to ride about 200 more then put it on and shim?
Thanks in advance |

Shim it It wouldn't hurt to put a set of washers under the needle stock I'd put at least one set.

I think he's saying he already switched them out. But I agree, a cager with the windows rolled up, listening to music and talking on a phone isn't going to hear you. They don't hear my 750 or chopper, they won't hear a lawn mower.

I haven't put it on. I've bought it already. I'm worried less about cagers and more about animals I live in rural Ohio. I wasn't sure if it would mess up the break in if I shimmed the Carb

the main part of the breakin happens in the first mile of an engines life. the first 2.3 miles happen at kawasaki's engine production plant
i might be wrong but i dont think exhausts do anything beneficial for most animals. dogs run at you faster cause they think you are barking at them. coyotes still DGAF... deer... well deer are too stupid to know what to do anyway. it probably helps with little squirrels and rabbits and stuff.

The question wasn't should I put it on. I'm going to regardless. It sounds way better and Im gonna feel safer. The question was should I wait to put it on

It wont do anything to break the engine in better or worse. Just put it on and put two washers under the needles.

I don't think he was asking anyone's opinions on the exhaust or whether or not to put it on or if it will make him safer. its his bike and if he likes the sound and "feels" safer and gives him more confidence riding, then that's all that matters. he just wants to know if he should put the exhaust on now and shim, or wait a few hundred more miles and install the exhaust and shim. I don't see how installing an exhaust and shim would be a problem at that mileage.

IMHO louder is not better. Louder is louder. That's fatiguing, annoying to both you and everyone around you, and of little practical value.
But that's just me. Go ahead, put that noisemaker on there and make up your own mind. More to the point, ride near a bike with a slip-on on it and see if it's THAT much more noticeable. Can you hear it? Sure, if you're listening for it. Will it get your attention? I don't really think so. I don't listen to loud music when I drive and don't talk on the phone if I can possibly help it. I've never once been alerted to the presence of a bike solely because of its noise that I can recall. "Loud pipes save lives?" More like "Loud pipes make me want to load up the ol' 12 gauge with rock salt." |

Go ahead and put the slip-on on...I say put whatever makes you happy and your ride more enjoyable on...as to shimming, don't worry. Just as a starting point, use two washers (and I'd recommend also taking out the snorkel) and ride the bike (red line in each gear) and see how responsive it is, if you're satisfied, leave it be; if not, go back and increase or decrease the number of washers as you see fit. Shimming is a trial and error process (as pretty much all carb work is...unless you use a dyno, wait, even then it's trail and error) so just take your time and tune the bike to your satisfaction. I can't say this enough, make sure you have JIS screw bits before hand (too many horror stories of stripped screws) and possibly even get hex screws to replace the stock one for ease. Much luck to ya bruh

Two brothers are obnoxious. Growlers and danmoto cans are even worse; and none of those do anything for performance. Full system + long can with lots of volume for packing = love and better tone without being ridiculously loud.
If you want a louder bike that doesn't have a crappy tone and only want to spend minimal $$$, ditch the airbox and rejet. Open intakes are very loud and throaty and make the throttle very responsive as well Shimming won't ever hurt your bike. Alex was right about the break-in. Just go have fun and don't worry so much about break-in technique. Posted via Mobile Device |

Agreed. I've got an AreaP full system on my bike -- the Quiet Core long one. It sounds GREAT and while a good bit louder than stock is absolutely not obnoxious.
