Where to park?

So I'm not really sure where I can park my bike. For example, when I go into walmart, I see the lot is almost full but don't want to park far. Can I park in between handicapp? Can I park where the bycicles are? Or by the main entrance, on the side as long as it's not blocking anyone?

This is something that I'm sure varies from place to place (and state to state), but around here, it is acceptable practice to park a bike in the yellow stripes at the end of the rows (usually around a light pole or something).
Personally, I wouldn't think around the handicap zones would be a good idea. Those blue stripe zone are first of all for the vans with unloading ramps and I just wouldn't want to park my bike next to someone who just maybe might not be the best in physical ability to park.
Some places even have dedicated parking for bikes. If nowhere is designated, then you just have to use a normal space. Make sure you don't park far back in the space so other cars can see your bike before zooming into the space. Also , very important!, watch out for the OIL slicks!

i know alot of strip malls(or malls for that matter)in socal, you can park anywhere, well except for the following:

1. Don't impede pedestrian traffic, (like sidewalk next to front entrance)
2. Don't park in blue area
3. Don't park in red area
4. Don't park in yellow area

Other than that, cops and rent-a-cops don't really care

Don't do it... there is a reason why there is extra room for handicap spaces.

If there's no close parking space available, I'll usually park next to the entrance and have not had a problem. Just keep it a few feet away from the doors where people enter and exit.

All good suggestions--In a lot of places the yellow lined area is OK. Absolutely stay out of the Blue Areas. You don't want to impede a van drom discharging passengers. Mark offered a good place for Wal-Mart and any store with a garden center--Good advice, Mark, I'll use that suggestion-Thanks. I really always steer clear of car spaces. Had a friend with a megabucks Ducati get creamed by a car thinking that the space he occupied was free. The bike was almost totalled just because replacing the bodywork (plastic and carbon fibre) cost a gawdawful amount o $$. As a rule, I park with the bicycles.

I think all the main points have been covered, but here is my version:

Generally speaking, use a parking stall.
However, motorcycles do tend to get more leniency when parking in non-traditional places, generally speaking, as long as you don't do something stupid. I'm guessing this is partly because some people (enforcement) don't care, and some people (customers, property owners, lower level enforcement) are just as confused as we can get at times.
Those are my thoughts.

Personally, I found that after the newness of a motorcycle wore off (still loads of fun though), I started taking fewer parking risks, RARELY split lanes, etc. That speeding ticket influenced some change, but not over the things being discussed here.

EDIT: The only places I personally feel comfortable parking outside stalls are, a) stores where employees or other customers already park bikes up toward the front door (HD and LOWES here), b) smaller private properties open to the public (not large shopping centers), unless there are other bike already parked there... don't like to be the trend setter, or c) places were it is much easier to blur the lines (like parks, etc.), d) places where parking is a bit** (rare in my town... still lucky I guess). I think it is hilarious how some members park in their appartments

I hope I don't sound like I am contradicting myself, I just don't often get the opportunity, or feel the need park outside stalls. If there is a BIG blocked-off yellow space that is out of the way, I would generally feel safe parking there, as long as there aren't a selection of open spaces right next to it.

I know there are those cagers that get pissed when bikes take up a whole space, but I am personally used to hearing the other type of cager complaint... the type that I think comes from Jealousy that we (bikers) don't have to wait in line (splitting is legal in CA), etc. So for them, I picture them complaining about our "special" parking spots.

I'm rambling.... no coffee yet.

Personally I refuse to park directly infront or behind a vehicle (parallel parking or shopping center car slots. You inevitably increase your risk, two-fold, of getting backed over or driven over cuz they "just didn't see you". Any thing else is wide open for me except of course "designated handicapped zones" & "fire lanes". I'd rather pay a minor parking ticket than have my bike screwed over in a parking lot for hundreds of dollars of repairs.

I'm with you Addy. Another thing to remember is that in most parking lots--at least around here, Law Enforcement Officers only have juristiction for Handicap spaces and Fire lanes--and that is only at the request of the parking lot's owner. LEOs will be the first to tell you that if you crash into someone's bike or car, that it is a different situation on private propery. This applies in Maine. In your area, check with your local CEO (Code Enforcement Officer). You will be surprised what you will learn. Ask me how I know.

Also keep in mind that sometimes it's not just where you park but how you get there.

I like to park as close to the front door as possible when I go into a dept. store or mall and sometimes the sidewalk is very inviting (out of the way, usually up close to the wall). I've found that getting off the bike and pushing it up onto the sidewalk doesn't get near the looks and/or comments as does riding it up onto the sidewalk and over the the wall. Now... I'm talking about the big sidewalks here, like what most wal marts have out in front of them, not a "regular" sized walk.

I just park on the sidewalk, usually a few steps from the doors...

Bikes get to park anywhere it is not marked "No Parking" or actually blocking doors, ramps or fire hydrants. At least here in AZ anyways.

When I park at the grocery store, they don't have bike parking, so I either find a spot close to the front, or near a security camera, and park it frontways, with my front tire as far out as the bumper of the vehicle next to me. If they're one-way lanes, I'll park closer to the "front" of the lanes, so that someone coming down it can see it sooner. Because sadly I've seen a bike or two knocked over by assholes divebombing into stalls.

At the campus I go to, there's either the designated bike parking, or cross-hatched areas at the ends of each lane where bikes usually park. I'll use either depending on which side of the campus my classes are at.

So, either park close to the front, security cameras, or designated bike parking.

Protip: NEVER park in the blue cross-hatched areas next to handicapped parking. Not only is that illegal (those guys have wheelchairs sometimes and such), but it's a huge dick move.

Two things to consider:

1. I have gotten a ticket for simply parking at the end of a lane in the Indianapolis Airport's parking garage, so consider the laws of such an area before you do it.

My best friend is actually in a wheelchair but still drives a van, and I have seen him kick or run into a vehicle that parks in the blue hashed lines. Don't be a dick

Not at all! No need to ever be embarrassed here. The way I found it was by just scrolling down the page on your posts, and looking in the "similar threads" area. More often than not, it does a good job of picking out threads that may have been on a similar topic, and in this case it did.

welcome, NJ. here in california, it's not uncommon to see bikes parked in pretty random spots. sidewalks, in front of stores, in gutters where cars can't get to. pretty much anywhere people can fit a bike, they shove it in here it seems. we're a little bit more friendly towards bikes here for some reason though.

I hope people around here have that same attitude because I'm pretty sure that'll be me parking up there soon enough. The thing is, people around here (in my immediate area) are so curious and nosey—especially the younger male population—since there aren't tons of bikes around to get used to. Don't want to have to take the gloves off ... I'm kidding. I hope.
