Front Fork Noise and Wobble

Ok, here's the deal.. My 2011 runs great, love it, couldn't be happier. However there is a small leak in the front left fork. The mechanic said it wasn't a big deal and not to worry about it. Having said that, when I hit a bump the front end makes a pop noise and the bars shake a little. Under semi heavy breaking the front end shakes a little. I'm wondering what may be the issue here? There are no problems when riding, only the loud pop and wobble with bump and wobble with breaking.

Any Ideas?

Side note: the wobble/shake isn't from left to right, it's front to back.

If that makes a difference.

Could be that your steering stem bearings are loose. You'll need to remove your top triple clamp and get a spanner wrench or a flat head screwdriver and hammer to tighten it up if that's the case.

I'll have to check that out. If that is the problem, is it urgent to fix? I'm thinking about going on a trip this weekend. It's 2.5 hours one way….

Could the noise be from low oil in the shock itself?

Yes it is an urgent fix. If you hit a bad bump at speed you might get a tank slapper. You don't wan to chance it.

Ok thanks, I'll take the Jeep for the trip and check it out when I get back. Thanks for the advice.

I took it all apart last night and found the problem. The bearing nut was a little loose but not enough to cause a problem. The leak in the fork seal has gotten a lot worse since the last time I checked it (less than a week?). Sooo now I get the pleasure of tearing the front forks apart to change the seals

Here is a good DIY write up on seal replacement.

You could try this out first. If its just dirt trapped between the seal and the tube, this would work. Or you get clever and make your own.

Consider this:
http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Caring_for_your_forks

Clean and lubricate those stem bearings.
The top nut acts like a counter-nut to fix the position of the top track.
