ignition hot lead
If I wanted to hook up an accessory to a power lead that was only active when the key was on, what is the best way to do this? Do I just tap the brown wire coming back from the ignition?

You can. Brown is only hot with the ignition on. When I installed my temp gauge, i ran a wire back to the fuse block and added an additional 10A fuse for accessories.
