[motorcycle.com] - BMW Sold a Record 123,495 Motorcycles in 2014

BMW reported its fourth consecutive annual sales record, delivering 123,495 motorcycles and scooters in 2014. BMW reported a 7.2% increase on the 115,215 vehicles sold in 2013.

That BMW set a new record is not a surprise, considering we already knew BMW surpassed the record just 11 months into 2014. Sales didn’t let up in December either, with 7,032 units sold in the month, compared to 6,343 units in the same month of 2013.

“For the first time in company history, BMW Motorrad sold more than 120,000 vehicles,” says Stephan Schaller, President of BMW Motorrad. “This is an increase of 7.2% compared to the already outstanding result of the previous year and is the fourth year of record sales in a row. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all our customers for the trust they have placed in BMW Motorrad.”

The R1200GS continues its reign as BMW’s most popular model, with 24,380 units sold in 2014. Second place went to its sister model, the more off-road capable R1200GS Adventure at 16,242 units. The R1200RT was third with 12,140 units despite a recall for defective Dynamic Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) rear shock absorbers. Also doing well was the R nineT with 8,488 units sold, putting it fourth on the sales list.

Germany continues to be BMW’s best market, accounting for 21,714 motorcycles sold in 2014, with BMW claiming a market share lead of over 25% for the 500cc and larger segment. BMW also continues to do well in the U.S., selling 15,301 vehicles in 2014 compared to 14,100 motorcycles and scooters sold in 2013. Other important markets for BMW include France (11,600 units sold), Italy (10,487) and Brazil (7,603).

Schaller says BMW aims to set another sales record in 2015 on the strength of new models such as the liquid-cooled R1200R and R1200RS, the S1000XR tourer and the newly-revised S1000RR and F800R.
