replacing starter motor

I have just completed replacing the starter motor, ran into one problem, and this may not even be a problem. While reinstalling the small gear that the starter motor turns, the larger gear (behind the Starter clutch cover) that contacts the smaller gear moved a few teeth backwards. I tried to move the larger gear forward to compensate for the movement, but there was too much resistance.
Is the movement of this larger gear okay?

You should be fine. The starter gear engages one way and spins freely the opposite. You resistance you felt was because it was engaged to turn the motor.

not at all. really straight forward, but i did have most of the bike apart already to try to run through it fully. I bought it from an impound yard and it wasn't running due to a trashed carb, and some other issues.
