This would happen...

So I've had my ninja for a few months now and i bought it with fairing damage. I did my best to repair it and give it a fresh paint job. Yesterday I finally got it completely up and running again with new brake pads and new spark plugs cause the old ones were bad. So I decided to ride for the first time today to work.

when i was on my break i go out side and check on it and i notice my ignition key hole thing looking kinda weird. I get my key and try to put it in but it only goes in half way and does not twist. Looking closer at the key hole i can see a dent and it seems like the whole silver thing is just loolsey sitting in there. I dont know who the f*** was messing with my bike but im pissed and i had to have some buddies come pick it up and take it home for me.

How do i fix this. I was so happy to finally get this thing up and running after months and now its unride-able. FTS

You need a new ignition switch. E-Bay should help you find one cheap.

Yea, people just can't stay away from bikes. The other day, my friend was telling me how strangers would just sit on their bikes or have parents put their kids on it. Ironically, while we were chatting about that, someone messed with my right mirror.

So I got an alarm. I wanted a Scorpio, but went with a Gorilla Cycle Alarm. I bought it to deter strangers/kids from sitting/touching it. I have full insurance to cover theft haha.

Anyways, how does one know when a spark plug breaks or is being ******?

The Gorilla's are great. The Internatrix alarms are better. You can wire them to your lights unlike the Gorilla and it has a perimeter sensor instead of the tilt. I have both.

Get an alarm. It's worth it. The Gorilla takes about 15 minutes to install. It takes about 30 minutes to install the Internatrix, after reading the directions. I had 2 people stand to scope out my bikes the other day. The tried to lift the cover and the alarm chirped. They got spooked and took off. I ran down stairs so fast...

The alarm won't stop the thief. But, it will make them think twice about it. Add a disc lock with the alarm and you have an even better combination.

Good luck with the ignition switch.

You can often find used locksets on ebay. Also check out http://www.ronayers.com or http://www.bikebandit.com as both are resellers of OEM Kawasaki parts, usually much cheaper than the dealer.

As to buying, the cheapest approach would be to purchase just the ignition switch and take it, the key, and the other locks on your bike to a locksmith to get the other locks rekeyed to match the new ignition switch key. That way you keep one key for everything.

What year is your bike?

Why not take the ignition assembly off the bike and take it to a Locksmith to see if it can be simply repaired?

Also, keep in mind, there are security type screws/bolts holding the ignition switch to the top triple.

Is there any way you can post a decent closeup picture of the ignition switch face? Most digital cameras have a "Macro" mode that will allow you to get the camera just inches away. It will require lots of light.

I'm not familiar with the newgen bikes but suspect that, as on my '06, you'll have to pretty much fully dismantle the top end enough to get the upper fork bracket off in order to drill out the bolts holding the ignition switch to the bracket. The bolts are special security break-off bolts and can't be removed with conventional tools. I'm wondering if there is a way to fix the switch in-situ.
