This is why we wear helmets

This was posted on my Facebook, don't know who the person was, but damn they were lucky to be wearing a helmet

Scary! Still, I don't think it's an ideal example of why to wear a helmet -- from what I can tell if he hadn't been then he might not have hit the bus (I'm assuming thats what sheered off the helmet) in the first place. Still... nutty.

I've seen this all over facebook with multiple stories attached to it.
I don't think it's real.
The angle that the grinding down looks real awkward. You would have to skid really far to grind it down that much of the helmet, and I dont know how hitting a bus would cause you to grind down a helmet.
I'm skeptical.

Makes sense. I was assuming something sharp had actually 'cross sectioned' the helmet -- it's way too straight/oddly angled to be a slide -- I'd expect that to have a 'fade in/out' on the edges from the head moving around while sliding at a minimum.

I guess thats a possibility. But even then, what is that sharp on a bus that would cut a helmet like that so cleanly at 70 mph.
Exactly. If it was a slide of any sort it shouldnt be such a clean cut.

Looking at it closely the rest of the helmet has no scratches at all.

If you look closely, there's a distinct pattern visible in the ground area of the helmet. It looks to me like someone used a belt sander to grind it down like that.

Also, the positioning of the flat section is suspicious. It might be believable if it were on the side or the front or back, but kind of on the top like that seems implausible if the wearer didn't have a grotesquely broken neck.

whether the story is true or not, that is still one sturdy helmet! I'm curious to know what brand it is.

There are so many fake stories that spread around like wildfire on social media. Part of the reason why it sucks. The good thing is, you can always tell who of your friends is a gullible moron, because they always repost stupid ****. Like, missing persons reports for people that aren't even missing. Or posting pictures of the wrong suspects of the Boston Marathon bombing. Don't even get me started on the whole "______ if I get 1 million Likes" thing

EDIT: (not implying OP is a moron)

A number of years ago, a F1 or Indycar driver took an upside down ride at speed. The trip down the track ground a hole in his helmet that, as I recall, was about 2-3 inches in diameter and did get into the foam. It looked nothing like the OP photo and it was created with the full weight of a open wheel race car on the drivers head.

Searched for a photo but could not find one.

My vote: Belt sander.

Jeff

I take it he didn't hit the road, thus no ROADrash.
