Preferred engine cut-off method?

Ok i pretty much have everything under control except shutdown procedure. Put the bike in neutral, but then do i hit the ignition cut off switch and then turn the key off? Or do i skip hitting the ignition cutoff?

I use the key to shut off my bike. if you use the kill switch, the lights stay on and you might forget to turn them off one day if you leave the key in.

as far as the bike is concerned, it doesn't matter which way you kill the engine.

I almost always put the kick stand down to kill the engine, then turn and remove the key and I always park my bikes in gear.

I think parking in gear is a good habit to get into so that if/when you do park on a slope one day, you're not gonna forget and have the bike roll. I park on a slope every day that I ride to work. Ive seen two people turn their bike off, remove the key, then walk away and the bike falls over (in a hurry)... I've seen a bunch of people "almost" do that, but catch themselves at the last moment. I started using the kickstand method so it would become a habit and I'd never pull that move... that was a long time ago and now I don't think about it.

I stop with the bike in neutral, press the kill switch, remove the key, put down the stand with a tap forward to make sure it's down, then get off the bike.

There are some who leave their bikes in first gear, I'm sure there are times when that's a good idea, so I am not saying it's wrong.

Short answer - kill switch.

I use either the kick stand or the kill switch - and i always leave it in gear, as it won't roll forward or backwards in gear on the slopes around here

I always leave it in gear....

We never use the kill switch. It makes a nice manual fan "on" switch for sure.

I leave it in neutral when parking it in my garage. Makes it easier in the morning to start it up to warm up, without me on it.

That's my method too. I do keep the steering lock on, even in the garage. I turn it off by turning the key. I've never used the kill switch, and I hope I never have to. I want zero wear on that baby if I ever need it while in motion.

I do it the way I learned in the MSF course:

neutral
kill switch
key - set to steering lock (the lock is my own doing because of being in an open parking lot)
kickstand

In the course they said you should always use the kill switch followed by the key, but for the life of me I can't remember why.

I switch it up. Sometimes key, mostly kill switch and on occasion the kickstand switch. It's a good way to make sure everything works and I remember reading somewhere about putting too much wear on one switch... or not using it enough is bad too blah blah blah... Not sure there's a right answer. Kind of like the contradictory studies of whether chocolate etc. is good for you

c'mon guys make up your minds IM ALMOST OUT OF GAS!!! I'm joking, for some reason killing the ignition before shutdown seems logical, like when you turn off a speaker system. You usually shut off the amplifier first before you turn off the preamps.

But that switch is very red, did kawasaki design it as the "shiny red button" for a reason? Is it the "oh ****" switch? Or does it happen to be red by coincidence?

I agree. I was told that the kill switch is not meant for everyday use. The kill switch is all plastic parts but the ignition is a metal barrel. It made sense to me at the time so now I
- STOP
- Clutch
- First
- Key
- Stand
- Steering lock (if i feel the need)

i used the kill switch almost exclusively on my first ride and wore out the switch, and although i'm sure switching tech has out-grown this somewhat, i'm a key guy unless i need hands on bars then it's the switch. i don't put it in neutral cuz i'm in 1st gear and bike rolled forward so it won't roll off the kick stand. (lesson learned farkle)

i've never used the kick stand to kill the bike unless i forget its down

ok, come on. sorry, but how can they turn off their bike, get off and walk away without putting the kick stand down? or did the get off the bike first, then turn it off and walk away.

Problem I have with the kill switch and the kickstand is that it leaves all electronics on! That means your lights, dash, taillight and possible accessories all stay on until you hit the key. I don't like the idea of that.. especially if you stay sitting on the bike to talk to someone, and forget to turn the key right away. Still that extra few seconds of battery draining doesn't make me feel happy.

MSF says to hit the kill switch first so that you don't take your hands off the grips, I think. Just don't let go of the clutch when taking your hand off to turn the key :P
Should I sit down while I pee, so that I don't accidentally turn away? They just train you newbie style.

If I remember correctly, they had you do that so that if you were ever in a situation where you needed to shut the bike off while in motion, you're first reaction would be to hit the kill switch.

It really doesn't matter if you turn the key or flip the cut off switch. I always use the switch. I know in MSF they told us to use the switch as well. Also I always keep the bike in gear when it is parked.

I do pop it up to neutral in the morning so I can warm it up while still on the side stand. While it's warming up I put on my gear.

In my course we were taught to use the kill switch but leave the bike in neutral. I always turn it off with my key cause the kill switch as mentioned by others is assembled with plastic parts. I always leave it in neutral in my parents garage just in case they need to move as they do not know how to turn the bike on (only biker in family). Now that I know a good reason for the leaving the bike in gear i will start doing that especially when i'm parking on a incline. You learn something every day.

No, they just advertise it more for the dark because it has a higher concentration of cacao (aka cocoa bean). Typically: neutral, key off, sidestand, dismount, lock forks.

Occasionally I use the kill switch just so that I know that the switch is working fine.

I think it would actually be good to get into the habit of using the kill switch so that in an emergency I can have the engine turned off with a quick flick of the button...

From page 28 of the Owner's Manual "NOTE: Althout th engine stop switch stops the engine, it does not turn off all the electrical circuits. Ordinarily, the ignition switch should be used to stop the engine"

I typically use the key to shut off the engine. MSF teaches you to use the kill switch so that it becomes second nature to shut the engine off that way, should you need to do so in an emergency (at least, that's what they told us). They also teach you to kill the engine, and shut the key off. Probably a good idea to use the kill switch every now and then to check that it is in working order.

ok.. this is pretty weird but when I ride the bike its fine. only when I finish parking the engine shuts off automatically o.O? this happens alot.
I don't release the clutch, but still almost everytime I finish riding this happens.
