My Ninja engined Chinese project

Hi guys,

Though id make a thread about this!

This is my 2014 ACS NAC12. I bought it on ebay from a salvage place in London.
I've been building a project car for a few years but it wont be done this year so I though this might be a little project on the side. It has been well abused and was going to need a lot of work but the main issue was the final drive had snapped off on a weak point in the design. Originally I was going to repair the gearbox but after looking about. It was going cost about £200 for the gearbox parts and because the original engine is a vertical split it was going to be a full rebuild on a cheaply produced engine. So I had a look about at the local bike breakers and picked up a 2011 ninja 250 engine with 6500 miles on it for £200.

Here's the bike when I got it home

And the damaged final drive

After about an hour of stripping it down

Getting the ninja engine in for measuring

Rear engine bracket template the simple way

A bit of mild steel and an angle grinder later

Some bracing from an old bit of tube

Old mounts ground out

Welding in the new mount

And after today's work the engine is mounted on the rear bracket.
Just have to figure out my front bracket

Thanks, Its a sifweld ts200 tig. Its some of the best monies ive ever spent!

Small bit done today.

Moved the fuel tank mount rubber things so they work with the ninja tank. The tank will fit just about but am gonna have to cut a hole in the frame to allow the fuel pump to fit so some re-enforcement there will be necessary.

Once that was done I trial fitted the radiator so I can gap the top engine mount around the coolant pipes and tried the seat with the tank. Its going to need some bending to fit and the tank has a **** load of metal tabs on it that need cutting off.... May fill it with water first!

For something like this, I've fillet-brazed it with brass for a clean smooth joint.

I would comment that seems like an awful lot of effort to fix a cheap Chinese bike. That it makes no economical sense.

But I know the answer to "Why?" is "Because We Can".

Great fabrication skills, cool project and keep the updates coming.

Luckily the rubber bits that hold the fuel tank leave about 10mm clearance either side so I can get away with a weld but yeah that would be a good way to go if it was tighter.

Haha thanks. Its still a cheap project, has cost me about £600 all in to do.

I've only got a few hours in the garage this weekend. Mainly due to a lack of argon stopping me from welding the front engine mounts in.....
I made a front mount for the fuel tank,

Then got onto the front engine mounts (more cardboard necessary)

Got everything set in place then my tungsten decided to turn firework.
So until next weekend when I can get more argon that's as far as I can get.

That's great work!

Are you going to keep twin exhaust? Or do 2-1?
Also did you get all EFI bits for engine? Or use carbs?

Thanks! No twin exhaust's, they crumbled away as I took them off so I've got some good 316 stainless to make some pie cuts in. I have the diagram for the Leovince GP corsa pipe so I may just use that for reference

. Think I Have all the EFI bits, Its much cleaner and less hassle.

Got alot done today.
I put some strength into the brackets, Firstly the top bracket I added a piece of 3mm and blended it into the top brace metal.

Then the same on the rear upper mount. That gives the front 7mm and the rear top 6mm of metal which should hold nicely.

I was struggling to get in with the torch so I decided it was time to disassemble the swingarm and forks.

Much easier to weld on its side!

And that leaves the frame almost ready to go to get coated.

Had a bit of an issue with access to the bottom oil filter. Plus the original bar was far from square. So a bit of cutting and grinding sorted it.

There was also a rear bar that I had cut out earlier to clear the oil drain plug part of the sump so I got a bit of spare pipe I had and made bit of web for the rear.
