Watch out!! Got me a noob license

Froze my ass off at Autobahn CC doing the learning curves class. 40 degrees F, windy, and raining like a monsoon. Now Im novice #501 for CCS.

Need to remember to tighten my choke cable a bit and to run the bike periodically to keep some warmth in the engine. It was a bit hard to start before the mock race at the end of the day.

Awesome!

I swear, the season opener at ACC has the worst record for weather around here. I think it's rained down there on that weekend for the last few years. Last year I skipped it and drove down to NCM in Kentucky instead. Was 70 degrees down there.

I'll stop by and say hi to # 501 at the tracks this year.

I cemented my status as a backmarker at BHF yesterday. Got a last place, two second to lasts, and maybe one third from last? Not sure exactly a few scoring snafus had me scored in the wrong class for one race. Had the pleasure if being lapped by Bruce B A few times. I guess my next goal will be to make it thru a sprint without getting lapped.

I swwitched to GP shift for the weekend. Lets just say Ill need another day or two to adjust. I botched a few shifts but nothing seemed to blow up.

Grats on finishing in one piece.
I switched mine over this winter too, at a couple of turns at RPM I have to upshift early or bang on the rev limiter. I also switched my street ride so I could practice a little. Back when I started riding there were all kinds of different patterns, the craziest was a little Kaw. that had a "rotary" shift 4 speed, all down, then one more down to neutral, then down again would put you back to first and so on, you could also lift it to downshift one at a time.

Got me my first trophy! 3rd out of 3 riders in 500 SB yestetday at Blackhawk Farms. There were more entered (~9 ish) but I think a wet track scared a bunch away. Track was pretty dry towards the end. And I finally wasnt lapped by anyone in that sprint.

Best lap was a 1:31:6 which was 3 secs faster than my last time at the track. I finally got qyuck enough that the tires are starting to talk to me a little bit instead of being firmly planted and steady. Maybe its time to switch away from my S20 evo street tires?

NICE!! Welcome to the addiction! I had a few friends racing that weekend! I never raced at that track but we used to coach there with the California Superbike School, many many years ago! Fun track. Glad you enjoyed it and congrats on the progress. Slow and steady, work on one thing at a time, strengthen the fundamental skills and the speed will come! WOOOHOOOO!!

Thanks Misti

Yep every time I go out the laptimes still come down. Mostly because Im starting from a pretty slow pace Im not sure how Ill handle a plateau but thats not the case yet.

The next thing I need to work on is getting around those on faster bikes and keeping them behind my bike. My options right now are to hire a fast rider or.. nitrous!

Naaaa, just keep working on fundamental skills and techniques and practicing them until they become ingrained and then practice them some more until you become really really good at them. Speed will come. It's not magic, it's not all courage, sure there is talent and some will be naturally better than others but I've seen regular joe riders that become really very fast by just working on the technique over and over and over again.

Is there a skill in particular that you think is the most helpful in racing, in order to get faster?

Next race Ill be working on turning in a little later on a couple turns and trying to plan my passes better so I dont just get motored by on the exit. What I did last time clearly didnt work as i was held up by the racer finishing in front of me. It made for some fun battles for sure.

Particular skill for going faster? Right now it would be passing and racecraft. I aint had much experience with either so far. Ive bee the 'passee' most often.

careful on late apexing everthing, you can open the door on the inside. some turns you absolutly need to protect the inside or you will be pushed out in the dirt on the exit, ive learned the hard way.

There's kind of this hate towards people taking defensive liines, though it always happens at higher level racing.

But I'll say this, at Blackhawk, if you go into the turn 3 carousel with someone on your tail, and you enter it from the left side, they are guaranteed to enter on the inside and take your spot. Then they go wide at the apex and push you off the track into the tire wall, hahah.

Working on it. Need to find an mp4 video editor first. My attempt at converting mp4 to .wmv for windows movie maker did not work.

Strangely, most of my videos have me struggling to get past slower lightweight riders on SV650's, a move that doesn't improve my position. It always seemed like I was battling those guys more than actual riders in my group. I could never catch any white plates though.

I'm retired from the track now, but I still get to Blackhawk to hang out.

Here's the 500 SS race. It was the second of two back to back races on a hot day. I definitely got tired towards the end.

Ok, so what can you do to help with passing? What do you think makes someone good at passing and someone else not so good?

And what are some things that fall into the categories of race craft?

Get more experience and ride faster!!

For the "racecraft" - on inside passes, getting a feel for when & where I need to stick my bike so the opponent gives up the apex. On technical sections, planning things a few turns ahead to put me in the right position to make a move. Remembering to be to one side or the other of slower riders when entering turns. Strategic parking in turns

Ill get there. Next race is two weeks out.
