Need advice

Earlier this year i acquired an 08 ninja 250 with over 200k miles for almost FREE. the bike starts and shuts off after a few secs. i got it checked, the mechanic told me i have compression issues and gave me 2 options. he can do the full maintenance(valves adjustments, carb clean,etc.)[$150] and he believes it will work fine after. or replace the motor[$350+]. both are financially possible. newer motor sounds better to me. but TBH i wanted to DIY entire repair.
* should i let a professional repair bike?
* do maintenance or replace motor?
* is DIY valve adjustment doable for noob at motorcycle repair? Video?
* does anyone have compatible motor for sale?

Before I could begin to recommend a solution, I'd need to know more about the problem. Starting fine and stalling after a few seconds would not automatically tell me I needed a new engine, for example.

I assume "compression issues" means low compression. Do you know the pressure readings of the compression test? If not, you can get a compression tester and check it yourself to know what's going on. It's true that low readings could mean valve(s) not completely closing due to need of adjustment, but there are many other possible causes.

If it starts OK and then stalls, low compression would not come to mind as the most likely cause, by the way.

i have not compression tested the bike myself. nor did i ask for results of test done by mechanic. i will check for myself and update you. This https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=288412 is my previous post explaining the issue entirely

200k, they should have paid you to take it away.

However, with that amount of miles I'd fix it and try to get another 800k on it!

My thoughts exactly! but how should i go about it. i found a valve lashing thread on this forum and am going to follow it to adjust valves.. after valve lashing i intend on recleaning carb, replacing OE airbox filter, ive replaced battery, and oil change standing by.
is there anything im missing?

Doesn't the odometer on these 250 only go to 5 digits? How do you know it has that many miles? Not calling BS, just shocked one of these could go that long...I'd be interested in the stories behind that bike...
