Interestingly enough, one guy in the article was quoted as saying.."It's another example of government intrusion into our lifestyle," What he fails to get, is that loud pipes are already a way of intruding into other's lifestyles. Neither is acceptable. So maybe if these bikers recognize there own offensive behavior, possibly others will as well? Doubt it.

In California, where this issue comes from, the do-gooders decided that heavy trucks have to stay in the far right-hand lane of the freeway. Then when we do, they bitch and moan about not being able to get on the 215 because of a wall of trucks in the slow lane. Give me a break!

It does sometimes.

It sounds to me like it's the hogz that are ruining it for the locals, not so much the sport bikes.

And I gotta agree some of those hog pipes are so freakin' loud it's ear piercing painful.

lol you know, its funny cause I now have the money to get a full area p quiet core exhaust system but now I don't really care to buy one...very interesting... Harleys have almost always been the main culprit in the whole noise thing. Its one of the reasons I really dislike a lot of harleys (though not all of them are loud). Try having a stupid loud dog bark all night at least the bike isn't there all night.
Meh... this is always going to be an issue that people will whine about, but when you think about cars can be just as noisy

I agree! Loud pipes are annoying in the city. If they can't keep it down (or have to rev their very loud bike so high for lack of horsepower to get up the hill), ban 'em. Had they respected other people's ears with their loud pipes, this would never have been an issue...

I'm surprised most of them aren't completely deaf in a couple weeks(they don't even wear helmets or ear protection). Sometimes I hear a harley go by and my ears are ringing lol.

It's Darwinism at its best. Ride a bike that does not handle. Ride without a helmet or any protective gear---and you have a two wheeled organ donor. Good thing they don't do brain transplants

I heard the most awful sounding bike recently. A VMax with barely and muffling. Guy was revving it like crazy, and everyone else (all on various bikes) were just laughing and covering their ears. Sounded like a local stock car race in the 70s.

Sunday night I was outside at about 10pm....Then I hear this obnoxiously loud bike coming. Curious, I turn, see the bike and watch it go by....and I'd approximate when he was 3+ miles down the road I could still hear the bike.

What was it?

A 250r.

That immediately dispelled any thought of me EVER putting an exhaust on my bike. And the guy was NOT driving like an ass, he was driving normally and around the speed limit.
Not only was it loud, but it made it sound like a moped or something since the revs were so high. The only time it sounded decent was when he stopped at a redlight and slowly accelerated off the line, but to cruise at 55ish, the revs were high enough to make it sound like a scooter, not a bike.

I have heard Harleys that are louder, but it doesn't matter, this was loud enough to be annoying, and it just sounded horribly. If I didn't know it was a 250r, I would have swore it was a little scooter that someone chopped the exhaust on. From the looks of it, I'd say 2bros exhaust, but it was hard to tell in motion.

yeah this thing sounded like the muffler had a piece of its outer metal flapping around loosely, like the sound was all over the place. really weird. a few minutes later a desmosedicci rode off, now that sounded sweet.

Think 80db is kinda low, wonder why they dont push for 95db thats in the VC now? Why should a bike be less/any different than a car...
Anyway, I had lots of tickets in cali for loud/modded exhuast... I dont recall the VC off hand, but we just threw the stock pipes on and got it signed off.

Here they passed laws saying no trucks in the left lane of 3 or more lane freeways. Finally, cars have a way to get around 3-wide or more rolling truck roadblocks. Those rolling roadblocks were a big problem on the freeways around here for years before that law passed.

The fact of the matter is that everyone who uses the roads pays road taxes to one extent or another. The fact that trucks pay more is not an excuse for truck drivers to block the roads for the other taxpayers.

I don't understand why truckers feel the need to block the road with rolling road blocks. Once me and a few hundred other drivers got stuck behind a pair of trucks doing five under on I-20 through more than 20 miles of Alabama. No idea why they were blocking the road. I was up close and could see that there were *no* vehicles visible for as far as I could see in front of the two trucks, and on that bright sunny Saturday visibility was miles.

Yeah, I called them in on the driving reporting hotline, both of them. Hope they got fired.

This is a little off thread... but rather than waste Govt time in petty "piping" down the moto aftermarket products.... why don't they legislate against "cell phone use" in cars..... thats what is "killing and maiming" people, which I think is a hell of a lot more important to public safety than a friggin aftermarket pipe! Here take this...... jump in the car, go kill someone, its far more effective than a gun!

So did anyone from California install a standard core AREA P on their 250? If so, you may be breaking the law if this bill goes through.

I don't think that singling out H-D is the answer. We have sport bikes--even Ninjettes, that have excessively loud pipes. There are those Honda and Mitsubishi cars that the kids put some sort of resonating device on along with the wings, that make lots of noise. Trucks with Jake Brakes will also get your attention. It is all around us. Somewhere along the line people will have to agree as to what is acceptable and what is not. Until then anybody's opinion is still an opinion--which is OK, since there is no standard

If you want to draw the attention of a LEO while having a spirited ride, change your pipe or add a slip-on. I have flown under the radar for over 40 years by leaving my bikes quiet. PoPo are attracted to you spooling up more than the speed you are going...that has been my observation over the years.

The noise pollution reassures the rider/owner's ego with phrases like:

"Men fear Me"
"Women desire Me"
"I am THE Man"
"No one F*CKs with ME"
"My tiny penis is adequate"

(somehow those last two link up.....)

On my current (permanent) set-up my pipes were way loud, trooper friends who ride told me the sound is way obnoxious for those behind you so there a moot point. Plus you've got mad skills (not really) I didn't have packing in the exhaust pipes so I spent $28 on a top shelf bag and did the work. Now it sounds like a big duke at idle, but that's all. Once I'm gone it sounds like an old honda 250 six from when i was a teenager. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!
