Record gator caught in Brevard County

I dont like the part they spent an hour trying to kill him, that doesnt seem right. Swamp peolpe would kill him in one shot
Poor old gator was probably deaf and blind......

LAKE WASHINGTON --
An Orlando man sets a state record for the longest alligator ever caught.

Since it takes half a dozen people just to move it, it’s safe to say this is one big gator.

"We didn't think he was that long until we got him to the house,” said Sammy White. “Once we got him to the house, we realized he was over 13 foot."

White and two other men caught the 14-foot-3.5-inch gator early Monday morning in Lake Washington.

It took all three of them, a harpoon and nearly an hour to kill the animal.

It was another two hours to get the 650-pound animal back to land.

"He did a lot of work for that alligator," said Hugh Ammerman.

Making the task even more difficult for Ammerman's father, Tres, was his boat.

It’s 3.5 inches shorter than the gator and already has plenty of scars from previous gator encounters.

The giant animal is now a neighborhood attraction.

Kids in the area have enjoyed sitting on its back while adults take their pictures.

What will happen in the future is unclear. White said they might sell it.

"Don’t really know, ya know,” White said. “We were out there trying to find a big one and we got lucky and got one."

While this is the longest alligator ever caught in Florida, it isn't the biggest ever. The record is 19 feet 2 inches from Louisiana.

Officials haven't been able to determine an exact age of the animal, but wildlife experts said the gator could be as much as 50 years old.

Easy big guy.... We have millions upon millions of gators here in FL. They have to be hunted at some point to keep them from taking over.

I don't understand Mr. Ammerman's comment:

"He did a lot of work for that alligator," said Hugh Ammerman.

Is this swamp speak, or was he employed by the slain gator?

Regardless, my 5 year old will be pleased to hear there is one less gator in the world - terrified of them.

well, if the environmentalists think that there are too many gators, and that they need to be "controlled" well then i guess its not like they are gonna go extinct over there.

regardless, that gator would have had to suffer a slow death for an hour or more to finally give in to the guys and die. still not a nice way to go after half a century of surviving in the wild as a top predator.

I agree, sucks to go for 50 years, then get killed by some idiot who obviously can't hunt gators.

I live in S Florida, and gator hunting is a big thing down here, and I find nothing wrong with it. I've never personally done it, but I do have friends that do, and it NEVER takes an hour to kill. Most kills are done within a minute or two, if it took this guy an hour, all he did was torture the thing because he was too inexperienced to kill it effectively.

now if only the gator hunter was in that plane to save all of those people from that ferociously small crocodile!

Wow, God wasnt happy with the slow death of that old gator.(yeah I noticed the dates)

I thought they needed to have tags, like buy them or something to hunt the gators? I know on Patrick AFB, they use to have a lottery once a year to hunt a few on base.

I can't say we have a gator problem here in Northern Minnesota. But I can say I've swatted Mosquitoes that size
