kenny, i understand your hesitation about tearing into the bike (i felt the same way). honestly, it is very easy if you read through the DIY a few times and understand the process completely. take your time, stay organized, above all else use the right tools (milwaukee offset screwdriver). otherwise you will turn a very simple mod into a huge headache (ask me how i know). you will be amazed at the difference shimming and pulling the snorkel will have on your stock ninja.

I have to agree, read it a few times and then just give it a shot! just make sure you have the right tools, and take your time. I was terrified about doing as well but once I got up the guts the job is really easy... Dealing with the cheep Phillips head Jis screws is the real nightmare! Kkim is the 250 guru and can help you fix almost anything that might go wrong!

Kenny... are you having "drivability" problems with the bike?

if you've never worked on bikes or cars before, this could be something you might not want to do unless you're experiencing some sort of problems.

saying that, if you do want to do this and need help, we're all here to answer any questions you may have. if you do a search, there are many threads on ninjette that you can research for info so you can get a clear idea of what's involved and what you can expect as far as difficulty doing the mod and what to expect as a result of your work.

It's great feeling to work on your own bike, "improve" it and feel the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself. There is also that awful feeling in the pit of your stomach when you do something to the bike that renders it to very nice paperweight.

Before anyone does any mod, they should research the work carefully and have a clear idea in their mind on how to accomplish the task.

Which tool set should i buy?

basic tools... what tools do you have now? experience level?

I highly recommend some JIS screwdrivers, though it can be done without. The biggest stumbling block/headaches people have had doing this mod has been from stripping the screw heads on the top of the carbs.

You'll also need about 6- #4 or 3mm washers.

Personally I bought the offset driver from Home Depot. Loved it! Works great and comes with the proper JIS bit.

I also bought one of these (see link below) as it made it even easier to turn the screws out without your hands slipping on the regular bit driver that is also needed with the offset driver. Hope this helps.

which washers did you buy... exactly? like I said in my post, are they SAE #4 washers or metric 3mm? either of those 2 choices will work.

Do it, its easy and well worth it! Having a friend over just makes things go even faster (tearing off both side at the same time, someone handing you tools, ect)

I didn't need any, I just had a really long screwdriver and different size ends to put on it

You don't have to find JIS type screwdrivers, instead go back to Home Depot and pick up drywall driver bits in the two smaller sizes. Drywall driver bits are are very cheap and they're a perfect substitue for JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdrivers. The Drywall driver bits have the same squared-off and aggressive profile as the JIS screwdrivers. All the screws on the carbs are JIS.

Or you could chose not to make the trip to Home Depot and use your Philips screwdrivers instead. The job will take a little longer because you'll "cam-out" almost every screw you try to remove.
