Front brake caliper bolts...wtf?
This is super-n00b but I refuse to ride my bike until this gets resolved.
Long story short, I replaced my brake pads a few weeks ago. I came home from a ride today and noticed one of the front brake caliper bolts (where the caliper attaches to the frame) was MISSING. The caliper was only being held on by one (upper) bolt. I checked the threads of both the caliper (since that's where it screws into) and neither the caliper or bolt appears worn. When I put them on, I torqued the bolts to the recommended level (32 Nm). Are they supposed to be loctite'd too??? Please advise!!! P.S. Anyone know where I can get ONE front bolt? If anyone has a parts bike ill buy. |

I read that the bolts had no torque spec.

The same thing happened to me and like you I learned the hard way to use locktite.

I'd use blue.
Red, if you're paranoid. |

I guess the mounting bolts do have a torque spec. Anyone mind posting it for completeness' sake? For my rear it doesn't help much because I couldn't find any metric socket kits that included hex keys when I was shopping. Heck, I even had to buy the regular 24mm socket separately because most kits top out at 22mm.
I checked and mine have not worked out in the last 800 miles since I changed my pads. I dread losing the alignment on my rear tire just to torque and loctite 'em on the rear. Anyway, why do the rear pads use hex mounting bolts and the front takes a standard socket? To me, that's silly. |

Here's one for you, the Honda service manual for my bike has arrows pointing to the front caliper bolts and says replace each time you remove them. I guess they fear bolt stretch??
