Trouble With Rear Wheel Adjuster Bolt

Hello all,
I have a '09 Ninja 250.

Recently, I noticed that my left rear adjuster bolt was missing its cap and 2 nuts that are used to align the wheel. I bought new ones, aligned my wheel, and then went to ride it.

After riding for about an hour, I went to look at the bolt and the left rear adjuster bolt was bent again! the cap and 2 nuts stayed on the bolt this time though.

This is the first time I've tried aligning my wheel by myself, and am wondering what is going on. Any help would be appreciated.

Very difficult to tell what went wrong from here in Ct but I would guess you did not tighten your axle bolt enough and the wheel was moving froward and back with de/acceleration. From looking at the picture you appear to have locked the nuts together and I will guess you adjusted your wheel and the chain was at the appropriate tightness. The only cause I can think of would be not enough torque on the axle nut. There is a slight possibility that the adjuster inside of the swing arm is broken/damaged but this should have been apparent when you replaced the cap and nuts. Also if the read wheel bearings were bad then you should have felt something while riding and even if they were missing, had the axle been properly tightened then the adjuster should not have moved.

mabe axle was loose, wheel moved to the rear, end cap spun sideways and sprocket bolt hit the end cap. other than that i cant see how it happened

Also possible bolt/stud vibrated loose from adjuster block and backed out. Two possible causes of what happened.

1. adjuster-block stud - not really bolt because it doesn't have head and it doesn't spin. How did you install stud into adjuster block? Did you fully thread it in all the way and bottom out threads? A!so use red loctite to install stud fully into adjuster block so it doesn't back out.

On some bikes, adjuster bolt screws in & out of block to position axle. But not on this one; stud should be firmly affixed to adjuster block. Then larger nut moves block to position axle. Smaller nut locks big nut in place. Axle nut clamps whole thing togther.

2. axle-nut - yeah, axle may not be tight enough. What torque did you tighten it to? Really need a HUGE torque wrench to get it tight enough. With 18" breaker-bar, I have to add a 2-ft extension pipe. Look up torque specs in manual and get it that tight!

Can't say I have any idea how that would have happened, but check everything over, replace what's required, and make sure you have the wheel pulled forward tightly and the axle nut torqued to the required spec (98 Nm or 72 Ft Lbs.)

Be sure to lock down the adjuster "bolt" into block with red Loctite, don't want it working loose.
Also record torque used for axle nut.

It doesn't look like it in video, but Dave Moss is buff geezer! In person, he's got Popeye arms and can tighten an axle nut to proper torque with his bare hands!!!

I don't think you want Red on that. I might use Blue (medium), but it's jam-nutted so that should hold it.

By using something between the sprocket and chain to pull the wheel tightly forward as you tighten the axle nut (as seen in the videos) it will snug everything. If you can move the adjuster plate at all, it's not pulled forward tight enough.

i believe dan means loctite the stud to the adj block. i gob rtv over the top of the jam nuts.

Yes, not on adjuster nut part, but deep into adjuster block itself. Stud has already worked itself out twice already (assuming axle nut was tight enough).
