parking lot practice

So i finally found a large vacant parking lot out of the way that will be perfect for me to work on some cornering stuff. Will probably pick up some cheap cones and give it ago on an up coming weekend, or maybe in the evening once it stays light out a little longer.

Hopefully i can play around here without anyone crying to the cops.

Either way should be fun,

Will update this thread as it goes and give my input on what exercises i did and how i felt they help or didn't ect... But for now i just plan on setting up a route. Probably 3 turns, maybe one 180 degree, into an opposite side higher degree turn, into some other turn. WIll mix them up, put in some double apex ect... and see how it goes

The area is near Columbia, MD. if anyone else is interested.

more to come and probably some questions on my end

More people should do parking lot practice. It helps you develop skills and sharpen the skills you already have.

I know a pakring lot near me... gonna 'practice' once winter is gone. Going to practice my body position and leaning. Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Someone give me a go pro to record the inevitable crash

Nick, if your going to crash it's much better to do so in a parking lot at low speed than on the street.

Nick, are you planning on practicing cornering in a parking lot with a bike with knobbies on it? if so then.......................... LOL ummmmmmmm NO!!!!!

You will learn nothing but your pain threshold or the breaking point of your handlebars.... whichever come first.

My dad has a Zx6r that is practically mine now. He's kinda bipolar... Long story. Anyway, I ride it all the time. It's going to be my mode of transportation.

Didn't know you were street riding at this point........ In that case you would be better served to learn braking!!!!!! Learning how to scrape the pegs doesn't mean jack if you don't know how to use your brakes properly and to their fullest potential. First skill any street rider should work on.

Good luck. Be safe and be smart.

I never said I wasn't going to. But I do that on my street. I live in the middle of no where on a really nice road... and look for traffic. But I wasn't going to practice scraping pegs... Was going to practice not scraping pegs lol

Please please please, doublecheck the entire area before commencing practice.
Our club did a parking lot practice about a month ago. We setup cones, did the whole thing, at the end we started doing hard braking practice. One of our guys brakes and the front wheel simply washes out from under him.
Upon closer inspection, we found an area covered in melted candlewax. From a candlelight vigil last year. We somehow managed to avoid it during the slow practice but sure enough hit it at speed. Bike slid a LONG way and unfortunately met the curb about 50 yards down, breaking both forks.

Candle wax? I'd put that solidly in the category of "extremely rare" road hazards.

More likely the will be a lot of sand. Since parking lots are not heavily traveled, the sand from the winter tends to stick around a lot longer.

I live across the street from a school and this is the case around here.

BTW, Lee Parks' Total Control book is chock-full of detailed parking lot drills complete with diagrams. Highly recommended.

Definitely plan on doing a good inspection of the area. Might get to give it a short go tonight. Depends on my evening plans or more so someone elses evening plans.

Make sure it is at least paved with no loose gravel and small stones. We have none like that here. I normally took the back roads to and from my gf's house when I first got my bike. Then as I got better confidence I took the main streets. Still, parking lots help. I usually have a road by a warehouse that ends at a dead end with a cul de sac. I go there to mess around and sharpen up.

@adouglas The city of utica does not use sand. This is not here I live however, Just where I work and go to get food and other stuff. But, the city where I live in, Frankfort, does use a large amount of sand. I'll have to look out for that for the first few months that of spring.

When we look at basic technical riding skills we see they are indispensable and create a firm foundation of control and can lead to confidence in ourselves and our riding. Are there other technical skills in riding? Oh yes, many. How many? Can’t say right now but I’ll leave you with this to think about.

I amused myself a few months back by writing up a comprehensive rider training program for newer riders. Result? 307 coached actions that can be done in a parking lot. You tell me, is there anything to learn about riding?" - Keith Code

Practice rolling on the throttle slowly, locking the rear, and working the front brake. I will sometimes practice locking the front at about 10-15 mph.

It has ended perfect, i know how much i can brake without locking up the front. I have been doing those two simple drills for the last 6 years every spring.

There's a nice lot by me in Elkridge, too. That's where I have used to practice in the past.

It didn't happen yet. Been super busy with a few different things going on + we are in middle of moving. But it will definitely happen next week as i will have a little time to myself. Will definitely post results.

The lot i am thinking of is off of 175, on Columbia Gateway dr, where the earth treks climbing gym is. Again hopefully no one gives me trouble about it but I have never seen a single car parked in the entire one part of the lot which is quite large.

I would say @ less than 15mph, one would be fine. You should scrub enough speed and not travel far enough for locking to cause a spill. Now going 25-30mph can have different results. I know that from experience.

If you have not I would also suggest reading this and other articles on this site. This may give more insight and also provide other exercises to practice.

Hey subxero: count me in on wanting to do this sometime. I've got a pretty hectic month coming up, but starting in may, if you're still doing this occasionally, I'd totally be down to come out and join in.

Definitely

I was hoping to do it this week but a lot of my time has already been cut short. Will have to try and get there Thursday if i am lucky. After this week i am hoping my schedule eases up a bit and allows me to have some play time.

I still practice a lot of low speed stuff in a parking lot every month or so! While it's really easy after a couple years, reinforcing those skills cannot hurt, only help. I try and recommend anyone to head out to a legal, empty parking lot and at least do some low speed corning/throttle control exercises from time to time. They are skills that can save your butt and your bike!

If the police do approach you, simply explain what you are doing as they are probably just curious and looking for stunters. I've never had a police person tell me to leave after I've explained what I was doing. Just please be respectful as they are just doing their job.

I tried doing some practice at my local community college and got kick out by the sheriff department; said they did not allow any practicing on campus ground.

Looking around for another empty parking lot to reinforce what I learned and get better at it.

That sucks, I learned to ride in the parking lot of my college on a ninja 250 in 93. I spent several evenings learning to ride in one of the back lots with a buddy.

Found a nice parking lot for a closed shopping mall in Union City, GA. There's even a spot with painted MSF markings! Now I just need some mini cones.
