Power in 5th very jumpy

Hey guys been feeling something a bit weird with my Ninja. Just outside of my town there is a really big suspension bridge with a good incline. The speed limit is 60mph and sometimes traffic can be a bit heavy. So sometimes I have to go WOT through the gears so I don't get run over.

Anyways, one time I was accelerating hard in 5th gear and when I hit 10-11K rpm, I lost almost all power for a split second. For the whole time in 5th it was losing and gaining power like a kid playing with a light switch. So I came off the throttle and shifted to 6th, problem disappeared for that situation anyways. I think once before I've had the same thing happen in 4th when again accelerating at a good rate.

Any idea what's causing this?...clogged carbs/fuel system? The bike runs perfectly in all other rpms and speeds. It's just when I am accelerating hard through the gears.

I think it could possibly be your clutch as that has kinda happened to me a few times. If im tryin to accelerate real fast and speed shift, the gears will engage but not quite all the way, and theyll slip a little bit and sometimes go into a fals neutral.

you failed shifting properly into 5th. it slips out back to 4th, or up to 6th for a second then back to 5th. if you pull the clutch all the way in and give it a rev it should resolve the issue. if it doesn't, changing gears should slam the little bugger in place.

Does it only happen when going up an incline? I know there are not that many hills down there in the Low Country, so it may just be the bike trying to struggle against gravity while under load at WOT. Being in the right gear and rpm speed is essential when going up inclines. According to you you are at 10-11k in 5th. With stock gears that's approx 74-80 mph. Kicking up to 6th dropped your rpms in a range where the bike is a little richer but still able to maintain speed.

I've had false neutrals before or gears slipping out plenty of times. It wasn't because of the motor not having enough power to get up the incline. it's like someone is turning the engine on and off randomly, which leads me to believe it's a fuel issue. Maybe the bike needs to get to optimal temps before I accelerate hard...I dunno.

Does it do it in every gear? You are unable to pass 11k even in first and second?

@Jiggles nope, then it's not running rich. It runs perfect in all other rpms and speeds. In fact I really warmed up the bike then went up the bridge...nothing happened, I stayed in 5th from 7k-redline. But later on as I passed a car on a long flat country road in 5th, it did the jumpy thing again at 10k-11k rpm. Once I shifted into 6th at about 70-75 mph, the problem vanished.

Nope, I purposely stayed in 5th going up the bridge yesterday all the way up to 13K rpm. I've hit the rev limiter when at the track, so I have a feeling for it.

I don't think I'm going to worry about this little issue, it's not like I'm at the drag strip or street racing. I just know where the issue lies and I know how to avoid it. If it isn't something that can jeopardize or damage my motor when I'm riding around town or with normal use, then I'm not going to fret about it.

I just look forward to when I can get a bigger bike, which means most of the issues I've had will most likely go away.
