Aftermarket Key Blanks

Well just like the titles says, when I bought my bike it only had one key, so I went to the local locksmith to get a spare made.

After lots of trial and error we found that a 'Curtis DA-28' key blank will work on my bike. It's an 09 250r.

So instead of buying the $15 blanks at the dealership and then getting them cut at a locksmith, you can just do it all in once place for ~$5.

Hope this helps!

That's good information. Do you have a picture of what the key looks like? I'm hoping it looks better than the stock Kawasaki ones.

If it took trial and error, your locksmith sucks. I went to mine and said "I need 4 copies of this" and walked out 5 minutes later with 5 working keys.

Still good information if anyone else has a very bad locksmith.

I didn't realize anyone had a problem finding compatible blanks, only that they couldn't easily find a place to cut them by code. eBay has aftermarket O.E.M. clones in black, red, and blue colors which even have the Kawasaki logo and "K" (trademark infringement!) for less than $1. Strangely, they don't have green in the current style.

My locksmith just took a look at it, held it up to some blanks, and I was out the door $3 later with a working key that I've had no issues with in 2 seasons

You must lose your keys a lot.

Hah. No the bike only came with one and the gas tank lock was seized up. So I had copies made so I could fix it without risking my one and only key. I keep the original in the safe, and one stays zipped in my jacket pocket for emergencies. One is on my key, one went to the GF. The other is extra in the junk draw. For $2 a piece, more is better.

I ordered two of these and got them cut at a local locksmith for $5. Took a bit to get them from Hong Kong, but I thought the price was good for an OEM-looking key.

I guess need to be more specific. It was only trial and error finding the right blank that would slide into the ignition, and by trial and error I mean they gave me 5 different blanks to walk outside to the bike and try them. A lot are very similar but off by enough to not work.

I was just hoping to help someone out that didn't want to order something in from either online or the dealer.

Like I said, still good information. Thanks for sharing. But still, the guy should have just known which one was right.

To you guys who got the colored Chinese blanks for a newgen:
Mine doesn't work.

I went to a professional "cash only" guru locksmith shop with piles of lock crap all over and he told me that it was the wrong key. I already knew that it didn't have the stabilizing grooves down the center (one on each side) and that the material on the side of the groove was gone too, but that wasn't what made him say that: It's the "stop" point where the key widens and no longer fits down the cylinder. I figured that they would just grind that further back to the appropriate level with a machine like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Copia_llave_video.ogv
I didn't understand his explanation, but "nope."

Even though it's designed to look like the newgen key, it actually looks more like a longer version of the blank they use for the pregen. I held it up to a pregen key and it is REALLY close with the same length past the "stop" and everything. Hmm. I did find this though:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/250818109927...84.m1423.l2649

Oh: And I really wish I knew where I saw that Kawi-green pregen key I mentioned because I can't find it now.
