In the 1950s and early 1960s ambulances and hearses were made on the Cadillac chassis by coach builders. An illustrative example of this may be found here.

Yes, and the one they chose in particular was a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulance instead of a hearse. They even showed it as an ambulance in the first movie.
