woohooo!!

Well I'll give you a short version of the story. I was trailering my ninja up to the mva on a uhaul motorcycle trailer. Something happened and the tie-downs came loose, and I look up into my rear view mirror and just see my bike fall over on its side in the trailer - that was the bad news.

So I've been without my bike for almost a month now.

Luckily, I paid for the uhaul insurance (about $7-8). Found out last week that they were going to pay completely for the $1478 worth of repairs. Bike was finished repaired on Tuesday this week.

Finally got to go today and pick her up, and I took a nice 2 hour long ride!!
Oh and she looks better than she did when I bought her

I bet you learn to tie that baby down better now.

You lucked out with that insurance. I won't tell anyone that this was all planned to get new body work.

Trailering my 10R home from a trackday awhile ago, the straps must have loosened a bit and right as I made the last turn onto our street, one of them let go and the bike leaned all the way over about 30 degrees, only held up on the other side by the single strap of the canyon dancer. Looked behind me, saw it leaning, and stopped only a couple hundred yards from the house to straighten it back up. No damage, no harm, no foul, but it was pretty lucky that of the 180+ mile trip, it decides to do that 30 seconds from home...

I tie the "tail" of the strap back onto the main part of the tie down strap, so if the tie down mechanism starts to loosen, the knot will help to slow down the rate of slippage.... maybe even hold it.

Buy good tie downs.. ancra original reds.

I've trailered bikes all over the country for 20 years and never had a tie down issue. I do check them everytime I stop though (stop signs and red lights not included). I'll keep an eye out for it though.

Yup, have only used ancras, but I've found even they get less and less effective as they get older; it's as if they get a little slippery over time and the mechanism just doesn't hold them as tightly as it once did.

Maybe it's time for wheel chocks.

yes, that's true, but nothing lasts forever. I've had my reds for over 20yrs and yes they don't slide as well as new, but I've oiled the mechanism pivot points and store them in the truck rear compartment away from sunlight to minimize breakdown of the nylon strap material. I bought some bargain basement tie downs (looked exactly like the ancras) and in a few years the strap material broke when tightening down the tie down. I learned my lesson and trust no other strap to hold my bikes.

good point... is there a life expectancy on tie downs?

Even if you get new ones every year, $25 is cheaper than body parts.

Kelly, did you ever go to Boston?

+1. Right now I've got a tiny foldup single-rail trailer that works great for one bike, but it has no front wheel chock and no feasible way to add one. Next trailer I get will be a 2-rail with chocks like the ubiquitous Kendons. Only issue is they take up that much more storage space...

yes, but the company (my boss ) had me on such a tight schedule I didn't have the time for any other stuff than work. Needless to say, I was pissed at him for doing that.

Sorry, as I was really looking forward to getting together.

whoa! just curious why uhaul paid for it. was it their tie downs or something? did something break off their trailer that caused your bike to lay down? why were they so kind as to pay the damages?

Idk I might stick to getting the bike towed if absolutely necessary. Otherwise get a trailer that has a track in it for the tires as well as that special strap that holds the front tire down in place. Can you rent those or do you have to buy one?

haha. wasn't a plan for that. a month with no bike just for new body work? noo.

No, they were my tie downs (walmart specials, taking everyones advice and buying ancras when needed). Not sure if it was my fault or not, could've been a faulty ring on the trailer, who knows. My state farm agent said to never rent from uhaul; they have so many lawsuits against them because they don't properly inspect their equipment and don't maintain it properly. Apparently there's been a bunch of those I-team and 20/20 reports on them.

Anywho, they paid me to fix it.
