Ninja 400 Track/Race Bike Mods

Anyone else building one? I ordered up (pre-ordered) Ohlins suspension, Rapid Bike fuel controller, some Bonamici rearsets, and some Driven clip-ons. Still shopping for a full race exhaust and bodywork.

Been working a little on mine, clip-ons, front steel brake line, Speedcell battery is all so far. I have a hook up for full K-tech but can't afford to pull the trigger yet. Race in two weeks, hope to break some hearts.

I was looking at Spears this morning, and they have a section up for 400 goodies already. Not sure how much of it is just 300 stuff that still fits the 400, but at least you know it'll fit.

I am curious about the Rapid Bike Controller. I had not heard of it so I looked last night, seems pricier than a Power Commander for example. Is there a benefit and whats your experience?

300 bits fit on a 400?

Anyone know if bodywork and suspension from a 300 fit on a 400? Or if a 400 motor will fit in a 300 chassis? :-)

I love spears. Most of their stuff says available soon, so it would seem they are working to get stuff in stock.

I think no on the suspension, Ohlins has all-new part numbers for both shock and forks. The forks are 41mm now instead of 37mm, so that's a definite no. Not sure on engine, but probably not since it's a new frame.

I've only used them on Ducatis so far, but in that application they work very well and can tune more parameters than the PC-V can, and the auto-tune function is more advanced. I've had great luck with them.

Someone on another forum said the shock from their 300 worked but there was some minor modifications required to fit it. Also Ninja 650 shocks may fit as well.

Thanks for the info sprint, so do you adjust on the fly? I assume you still have to dyno tune and not just adjust the map?

You don't need to dyno tune with the Rapid Bike, it self-tunes. It comes pre-mapped for the particular bike and exhaust setup you have, and is usually pretty close out of the box, but then it auto-tunes to fine tune the settings. You can use the software to manually adjust if you want to, and you CAN dyno tune and manually adjust based upon that also, but I've never found the need to.

Engine is all new as well.

I wouldn't expect anything to work between the 300 and 400.

I'd look into upgrading the clutch, as there are already reports of track/race 400s having clutch problems.

My clutch was slipping on hard acceleration, also need to upgrade the shift detente and spring as hitting multiple down shifts as problematic

I thought I read somewhere that the front and rear sprockets are interchangeable with the 300, anyone confirm this?

Oh great - another Ninja with shifting problems. Please keep us updated on any shifting mods you do. I did the spring on my 300 and it solved most of the problems.

Can't confirm, but I've heard the same.

I ride an N300 now, and thinking in getting a 400.
The lack of interchangeability of aftermarket parts is discouraging.
It looks like starting all over again.

What I've heard so far is:
Levers, OK.
Sprockets, OK

Pipe, not ok
Power commander, not ok.
Suspension, not ok.
Clip ons, not ok.

Again, what I've heard. I don't have an N400

What problems did you have? Slipping too?

I get a false neutral quite often when riding high revs. Either up and down shifting.
But maybe is just me screwing up.

Yeah same on my 300, the upgrade from factorypro solved the issue though. I have a buddy who is working with a 400 in MotoA. He says they are getting a clutch upgrade through Spears racing, not sure what all that involves. He also says the sprockets are interchangeable and I should be able to confirm in the next day or two

The clutch on my 300 has never slipped. The biggest problem I had was the transmission jumping out of gear. It had a particularly bad habit of doing it under hard braking and usually just when you were tipping into a corner. The sudden loss of engine braking at a critical time was very disconcerting.

The heavier detent spring solved 99% of the problems though

LOL! 'disconcerting' is a nice way to put it. It happens to me once in a while and I'd say it scares the $hit out me. It made me visit the grass more than once.

Specially because the N300 has a lot of engine brake so you adjust your braking to that, and when you loose it you're in trouble.

Yes I've made a few trips into the grass as well. I'd be interested to know from anyone with a 400 if it also suffers from the same issue of popping out of gear. The slipping clutch on the 400 should be an easier fix, with the replacement of the friction plates and springs.

Finished my first race on the 400 this past weekend, and didn't have any shifting problems other than it's really easy to overwhelm that factory slipper clutch and have it "free wheel" for way too long. I'll be looking into an aftermarket slipper clutch for it.

Thank you for the updates, I haven't seen or heard all that much about the 400 yet other than it's stupidly fast compared to the 300

clutch issues are interesting, I hope they upgraded the transmission. Mine didn't show issues until later in it's life

Can you elaborate on this? This is the first bike I've ridden with a slipper clutch, not sure what effects/feelings I should expect with it.

One thing I've noticed is that if I'm WOT and shift up, as the clutch engages it almost feels like it's spinning a bit before full engaging. Not sure if this is an imagined feeling, or if it's at all related to the slipper clutch, or similar to what you're describing. Just something I've noticed when riding hard.

Well, no. This is when racing, going from 6th to 4th at the end of the straight and banging the two downshifts late in the braking zone, let the clutch out smoothly and expect the engine to pick up and start providing some engine braking but instead it just freewheels the slipper for a couple of seconds until it finally catches up. Not a good feeling, it's not predictable how much engine braking you're going to get, so you end up using a little more front brake and then have a hard time holding the apex. It might be possible to just put in some stiffer clutch springs and solve the problem.

Can't speak to the 400, but on my 300 I barely notice the slipper - other than that I don't grease the rear on downshifts unless it's rainy. Personally, I like that I can pay a little less attention to the clutch on corner entry and just have the power pick back up when the revs are matching again. If you feel like it's too light, I'd definitely try stiffer springs before you go nuts on an aftermarket unit. Springs are cheap, and it might even help a bit with preventing false neutrals.

More on the shifting issues, there is quite a lengthy thread one of the other Ninja 400 forums, with several people having problems in everyday use.

Penguin school has N400 race bikes to try. I was going to yesterday but decided I was too tired and sore so I stayed on my 636. Their sister company woodcraft has lots of N400 stuff available.

How's N400 build coming Bret?

Found some cool articles on 400. I hung out with Rocco at some races last season. He was racing both stock 400 and his MotoAmerica bike.
