Hernan's presence here taught us a lot... yet, his leaving teaches us perhaps the biggest lesson.
Thank you, friend and mentor!

I'm so sorry to hear that Hernan. Best wishes. Stay in touch!

As a side note, I used to work IT for the center for the blind. Some of them have become very fluent operating a computer through only sound and voice. There are lots of different software options for aides in reading and navigating. If you get bored maybe something to play around with

Very sad to read this. I believe you are the epitome of wisdom, kindness and patience on this forum. Everything you have done and contributed to the forum has made it a great place for all who visit and you will always be a big part of what it has become and what it stands for.

best of luck to you on where the journey takes you.

It has taken me a while, but I could read all your encouraging and kind words.
I did not know about the available software that could help me: still learning from this fantastic forum !!!
Depressed mood is my main problem at this moment.

I am far from knowing everything about motorcycling, I have just been very passionate about it.
When I did not know the response to some questions, I researched the subject and asked questions to more experienced friends, learning about something new in the process.

Never quit on the young inexperienced riders: they badly need our help, it is only that they don't know it yet, in most cases.
Pass your knowledge on to the new generation of riders.

Most sincerely grateful to you all.
Keep calm and ride on !!!

I attached a sound file. Text to speech programs are getting much better. I mean this isn't a prime example but it makes me laugh.

We'll all miss you. I've lurked for a long time, only occasionally venturing out into the light to post about carb problems, but I've learned a lot from your posts over the years. You've always been one of the first to pop into any mechanical issue thread with helpful suggestions and explanations, and you've helped so many people at all stages of motowrenching ability.

Ride on!

Just posting to echo what some others have mentioned. There are several pieces of software that can read webpages to you. One is called Jaws. I work at a college and I actually helped a completely blind woman complete several online course using this software. She read a 300 page online textbook using it. The software reads text aloud to you, albiet in a funny robot voice. It requires patience to master the software, which I think you have!

Jaws has different voices you can download, some of them sound close to natural.

Don't go! Let someone help you with enlarging the text or some other function!

If you do go, it was a pleasure reading your posts. Your insight and knowledge of these little beasties will be sorely missed!

Thank you!!

Well Sir. Looks like we both get to "ride" off into the sunset together.

I have learned that, even though it is hard, giving up our passions really amounts to just giving up things.

Other things are more important like health, family, and friends. You will always have a crap load of friends here on the forum.

All the best Hernan.

Jeff

Again, thank you all much!

My wonderful wife has been reading and writting some of the lasts posts for me, and even using the "like" feature.
She likes riding as a passenger very much, since we were both teenagers, but she is more into cooking than into discussing motorcycling subjects.

For first time, I felt very afraid of riding today and aborted my plans.

I don't know if you'll be back to read this, but I really want to thank you for all the advice you gave me, for everything you've done for me and the other folks here. But perhaps the worst part of it is hearing that you might have to give up riding soon. I'm so sorry to hear it and I wish you every strength.

As others have said better than I, you'll be missed.

Motofool, I've read so many of your helpful posts, and then you personally helped me with a silly broken bolt in head issue...

I'm located in West Palm Beach, I'm sure we can find a few people that could help you ride even if you were blind as a bat! We'll just ride on each side, all around you, and work out some code where, a blip of the throttle tells you which way to lean...

But seriously, if you want a riding buddy, we can choose straight roads, roads you know well, early in the morning for less traffic...anything to help you ride, would feel like i'm contributing to society.

Cool

With the help of your encouragement and kind tips to palliate my vision limitations, and with the patient help of my wife, I have been able to stretch my following and writing of posts in Ninjette.org for 10 more months since my first post in this thread.

The problem has worsened during this time and everything from posting to reading, has become increasingly painful and sad.
This past week, I have felt very depressed and limited in all my activities.
I also believe that I should not ride anymore.

I understand that it is my time to stop posting and following posts here; but I am very happy to see so many members doing the right thing and helping, guiding and encouraging new riders.

Again, my very best wishes to all.

Keep calm and ride on !!!

I'm very sorry to read this, Hernan. I can understand a little of your sadness by comparing it to when I thought I was losing my hearing in one ear. When that turned out to be much less severe than I had thought, only then did I realize how much it had been affecting my mood.

I have known blind people who used the various software and devices you probably know about so they could continue to interact with others by computer. It's my hope that one of these can work well enough for you to allow you to keep helping folks on forum(s).

In any case, I wish you the best, and hope you don't lose contact with this board.

Very sorry to hear that.

I, like the members here, had hoped that things had gotten better and were working out for you.

If there is any way that you can stay active here please do.

If not, you will be greatly missed.

Take care. Hope you can find happiness again in some way.

I'm not gonna push you to stay if you don't want to. If it bums you out trying to use the forums, then don't worry about it. Posters on Ninjette will link to your posts and threads for generations to come, Hernan

An elderly person I know has had good luck with a new device. I think it's called e-sight or something similar. Macular degeneration typically affects the center of vision, without affecting periphery. The device somehow takes objects directly in front of the wearer and makes them appear upon the periphery of their vision.

Heard they were about 8 grand for a pair, but insurance may cover it.

Not sure if it's relevant or not.

Hang in there Hernan.

I'm just now seeing this, such a shame to hear of his condition. Either way I wish him the best.
