NO ONE likes getting licence penalty points but at least they’re a deterrent for bad drivers, right? Not going by DVLA figures.

A woman from Isleworth, west London, accumulated 42 points last year, all for failing to tell police who was driving at the time of an alleged offence.

Meanwhile a man from Warrington, Cheshire, gained 36 points for driving without insurance six times in less than two weeks.

Other high scorers include a man from Southend, with 30 points after being caught speeding 10 times.

Normally, 12 points within three years leads to a ban under ‘totting up’ rules, although magistrates can exercise discretion if it would cause exceptional hardship.

Simon Best, Chief Executive of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: "Drivers must expect that 12 points means a ban or the whole system falls into disrepute."
