[visordown.com] - Lower drink drive limit planned

THE All-Party Parliamentary Group on Alcohol Misuse has today called for a lowering of the drink-drive blood-alcohol limit from 80mg/100ml to 50mg/100ml – meaning that just one drink might be enough to tip some drivers over the limit.

While not an official body representing Government plans, the All-Party group’s recommendations are still sure to be noted during any future reforms. The call for the lower limit, which the Group suggests should initially be applied only to young drivers under the age of 21, is one of ten recommendations. Others include minimum pricing per unit, tougher restrictions on alcohol marketing and health warnings on alcohol products similar to those on tobacco. It would also like to see local authorities take ‘public health’ into account when deciding on whether to grant alcohol licences.

Of all of those, the drink-driving recommendations are likely to stir the most passions –criminalising drivers who, under current laws, are considered safe to be in control of a vehicle. What do you think? Would a tighter limit cut deaths and injuries on the road? Or does the real danger on the road come from those who already flaunt the existing law?

Read the All-Party Group’s manifesto.
