Oh yeah!!! Kawasaki Green LED's.....

I wanted a little bling on the bike. So I just finished installing 8 green LED clusters in the fairings. 4 on each side. The LED's are managed by a switch installed in one of the little round sidecovers. This way, if I need to turn them off, I can bump it with my shin while riding, and its discrete.

The LED's are on a seperate circuit, so I can run them during bike nights without the engine running. They draw less than one amp, so its no biggy.

This is an awesome mod. How did you wire it and where did you mount the LED's?

There are four LED clusters on each side for 8 total. They are mounted to the inside of the fairing, and have a plug similar to the turn signals so that I can disconnect them when I remove the fairings. I mounted them using industrial double sided 3M tape.

The wiring is run into the little round side cover, where it meets up with a push/pull switch. The switch is connected to a fuse, and then to the positive terminal of the battery. Of course the other end goes to ground.

Here is the wiring diagram, showing how I wired it all up. Really simple easy.
The LED clusters and push/pull switch I got from a local autoparts store.

I spent most of my time, waterproofing everything with heatshrink. It took about 45min to install it all.

I got em from advanced auto parts.

There are tons of these LED things out there. The SMD strips are really nice too, and much easier to install, its just a sticky backed strip of LEDs. Unfortunatly, my store here didnt have them in green....so I just got the cluster ones. Id recommend going with the strips if you can find them in the color you want. In my opinion, they are much brighter, and far easier to install.

Two things that might trip you up.
First...the LED placement. Dont just slap them on there anywhere, pick your positions really carefully. You want them to light up the internals, but you dont want to see them. Hide them well, and walk around the bike with them on to make sure there isnt any spot where you can see the LED itself.

Second, pick your switch carefully.
I had to do a lot of work to make the switch fit right into the side cover. I ended up having to modify the switch case because it was too big to fit in the frame hole. I wanted one of those pushbutton switches where you click it on or off, but I couldnt find one.

Third, make sure you clean and prep the area where you are sticking them. You dont want them coming loose during a ride. Toss the crap tape that the LED's come with, and go get some good high quality 3M automotive/industrial double-sided trim tape.

Fourth, USE A FREAKIN FUSE. This should be a no brainer, but people miss this all the time. It should be 1.5-2A tops for LED's. Just power up all the LED's and measure the current, then fuse it properly.

Fifth, heatshrink ALL the connections, and make everything as waterproof as possible.

The good thing is if you connect it on a seperate circuit, and not into the bikes wiring...if something goes wrong. It doesnt fry your bikes wiring harness. And you get the advantage of being able to light it up without the key in the ignition, or the engine running.

i just ordered some blue SMD strips from ebay and a waterproof switch. dunno how good the strips are going to be since they were hella cheap, but you never know. sometimes it's a pleasant surprise

I did a little more work tonight. I really wanted to get the windshield to glow.
It was a nightmare to get it right, since I had to disassemble the front end of the bike to get the LED's in there.... but I finally got it.

I used a green SMD light strip, carefully placed in the front of the fairing to get the windshield to glow green.

I think it looks WICKED cool with it all lit up. The pics dont do it justice, as they mess with the colors. The color is the exact same color as the bike...that nice kawasaki green.

Getting LEDs on my bike. I wanted to see how you guys solved the problem with the right side fairings or if the heat from the exhaust is even a problem for the LEDs. Placement pictures would be greatly appreciated.

Sadly no, haven't heard anything. I ended up spending money on projector lights and retrofitting it to my head lights which I'm in the middle of doing. ... LEDs would have been easier lol.

I found a set of LED stripes, kit comes with 6 stripes, tape and wiring and a remote to change the colors and sequences of the lights. I am wondering if you certain brand is better then another or if these things are all pretty much the same product just different companies??

As far as I know, they're all pretty much the same as long as you buy from a well-established company.
But I am not 100% certain.

Oh, and no, heat has not been a problem. Just make sure you route the wiring so that it does not rest on any hot parts. There is a good 2" between the engine and the fairings, so heat shouldnt be a problem.
Ive still got them running on mine. I did have one LED go out, but it wasnt heat related. I think I broke it while I had the fairings off doing the valve adjustment.

Ive been looking at the Kuryaken LED kits for motorcycles. A few of the guys here have them, and they are SUPER bright, you can even see them in daylight. I dont know if they make them in green though.

i was debating on putting LEDs on my bike but questioned if i'd ever use them or not...considering they're illegal and you can only have them on when your bike is just sitting there

It depends on where you live, and what kind of lights you choose.
RED and BLUE are big no-no's for many states or LE because...well...LE uses them. Some states ban them all.
Here where I live, I ride around at night with them on all the time, and cops couldnt care less, and surprisingly here, they dont even care if they are blue or red.

yeah i know red and blue are a garaunteed no. i'm not sure if green are illegal here or not however.

Here's a good idea, put some white LEDs at or through the seat cowl and point them toward the rider. While you're at it add some at the front and also point to the rider. This will be an awesome visibility DIY.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by under the seat cowl and at the rider (the rear seat replacement cowl possibly?), but I believe I did something similar.

These look blue in the pics, but they are white strips, 16 of them total. I originally only had a few strips under the side fairings, but I decided to add a few more to the main fairings as well as some directly under the seat, behind the battery compartment, plus some underneath the cowl directly beneath the seat.

It isn't nearly as good as the OPs, but I rather like it.
