Bay Area Ride: Mt Hamilton/Mines Rd Ride - August 6th

Since we've already had 2 food based meetups, lets do a ride this time.

Date/Time is TBA. Last time Tommy and I did this ride, it took us about 2.5-3 hours to get from Evergreen Donuts to Livermore because of how slow we were riding and also spent some time relaxing at the observatory.

Chosen date/time -- Saturday, August 6th, 9AM @ Evergreen Donuts

Here is the proposed route:
Meet at Evergreen Donuts on Quimby then head up to Lick observatory. After we take a break/photos/picnic/whatever floats your boat, we'll continue up to Downtown Livermore for brunch/lunch/snack/dinner and part ways there. Roads are pretty twisty but we'll take it slow and enjoy ourselves especially since the view is amazing from up there.

Currently In: as of 08/03/11
--SetaSai - Brian (Me)
--CThunder-blue - Tri
--250Solace - Andre
--yujayn - Eugene

Pending confirmation:
-eds2fitty - Ed (getting dragged along by Tri but might need to work)
-o2ninjaeastbay - Gabe (maybe depending on work)
-Todd250 - Todd (if it doesnt end up on race day... so probably)

Last futzed with by setasai; August 3rd, 2011 at 08:32 PM.

Brian,

How many stops will we be able to take? Are there places to stop in between the major stopping points? I want to take some action shots of the ride; I ride ahead of the main group and set up and take pics as people lean around a curve. It would only work if there's a shoulder for me to stop at though.

There are quite a few driveways that we'll be passing that you can setup at. Apparently people live out there as well. As for action shots, the first half on our way to Lick observatory have turns that are quite tight so we might be going so slow it wont be much of an action shot. The second half from the observatory to livermore is much more open and has more spots for you to setup. I'd suggest you enjoy the ride to the observatory and then take more pictures on our way to Livermore.

As for possible dates, I'm free July 30th, August 6th, or August 13th. Basically starting July 30th, I have weekends open.

My birthday is August 18th, so I'm not sure if the 13th will be good for me. July 30th or Aug 6th looks ok.

It looks like Mt. Hamilton shares the same weather as the bay. That's good to know. I wasn't sure if I should buy some perforated or non-perf leather pants.

Perforated with a liner? It could get warm. Last time it was cool at the beginning and by the time I got to the observatory, it got warm and so I ended up removing the liner.

What do you have now?

I don't have any leather pants right now, just my commuter Joe Rocket ballistic 7.0 pants. Looking at the AGV Willow pants since those seem to be the closest to my inseam.

Looks like your Joe Rocket pants dont have vents on them. If that's the case, I'd get perforated leather pants because personally, vented pants are still ridiculously warm when the sun is beating down on you even if the wind is cool. Especially if we're talking about bay area summer. You could probably still fit some nylon windbreaker pants under if you had to. That's kinda how I treat my overpants.

Glad you can come and welcome to the forums Todd!

Brian, the route we're taking, is it mostly grassland with some trees here and there? Just trying to figure out the best thing to wear. Leather pants is just not in the budget for me atm.

Last time I wore Scorpion All-in leather jacket without the liner and Scorpion Exowear Deuce mesh pants without the liner. It felt a little warm overall but those were one of the hotter days. There is some tree cover but dont expect it to shade you as you're riding. I would wear whatever you're used to wearing but lean towards the cooler side. I'll be using the mesh jacket and mesh pants again and bring a sweatshirt incase it gets chilly.

July 30th or August 6th since Tri's birthday plans interfere with August 13th.

What time would you like to begin? It takes about 3 hours to get from the Donut shop to Livermore. Only because it's so twisty. Start earlier and we can catch lunch, start later and we'll end up with snack/dinner.

Bummers. This time I cant change the date since i'm busy on the 7th but we love that road so much that we might do it randomly again on the weekdays. What is your work schedule? I'll see if we end up scheduling another one in that region.

Fri and Sat I have work (training) from 830a-530p in BERKELEY!!! (kill me now) for the next month or so. Other than that I should be free every other day of the week.

Let me know if you and your friend Tommy want to ride. I'm free most days.
Theres a place in Gilroy called OD's kitchen that serves awesome food plus it's a fun ride down there. Let me know if you guys are down.

Yea sure. Definitely. Tommy has to finish his applications and I'll be in socal for a week but after we'll definitely hit it up. I've heard of OD's kitchen. Been wanting to drop by there sometime as well.

Absolutely amazing food that is incredibly underpriced. I left a 40% tip by accident because I misjudged the price of the food.

I just did Mt. Hamilton, Del Puerto, and Mines today. Roads are in pretty good condition, with a little gravel here and there, but nothing too unexpected. Weather was fantastic.

It'll help a little. I've got 4000miles on my IRCs right now and not once has it felt like it didnt have traction. Granted I probably havent pushed it too much but for the most part, take it easy and dont ride over your skill level and the IRCs should do fine. If you can mange to wear them out, great. I'll probably need to replace them by the end of the year at the rate i've been riding lately.

You can borrow my tire spoons, bead breaker, and wheel balancer if you need them.

Ive got 2300 miles on mine lol. Reading what other people have said on this forum has caused me to limit how far I push the bike with these tires.
