Unhappy Pam

Hi Guys. I'm in rural Northern New South Wales, Australia.

I have just bought a 2009 XL1200C Sportster and I CANT UNLOCK THE DAMN PETROL CAP, which brought me to this site. I rode it home 2 days ago and all attempts by me and others have failed. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. It seems to be a common problem as there are lots of similar complaints on line. I've tried every suggestion. To no avail. If someone can help me I will be eternally grateful.
The shop where I bought it is 2 hours away and I'm not sure I'll make it. I have no idea how much gas is left.
Hope to talk about a whole range of interesting topics, if I ever get really going.

Before you drill, maybe you can remove the tank, remove the petcock, and then carefully fill the tank through that opening with a long neck funnel? It's not a long term solution, but it'll get enough gas into the tank so you take it back to the shop to get it fixed. Hope this helps.

That is a good idea. But you should be able to fill the tank through the fuel line if you make a line long enough to go above the tank.

It just unscrews. Use the palm of your hand to press down and turn counter-clockwise. This is easier with a glove on for traction
Sort of like a pill bottle you have to push down first then turn

The video would help with providing pertinent advice.... but it also may be humorous. On all the sportsters I have ridden you push down and rotate.

That's the reason I asked for the video. My friend has a Sportster and showed me how to take off the gas cap. It's like the old school Tylenol bottles. Push in, then turn.

You could also try a heat gun or hair dryer for a while in order to soften the lock mechanism before turning that key.

Welcome, Pam !!!

hmmmm, maybe Pam realized she was on a ninja 250 site...

and not an HD site...

there is more displacement in that one bike, then all the posters in this thread put together.
