July 4th Vetter Challenge , Hollister CA

This coming Saturday, Juy 4, 2015, the Vetter Fuel Economy Challenge season will open in Hollister CA. As always all riders are invited to ride with us as we seek to push the envelope for real-workd motorcycle efficiency.

This event will start at 10 AM at Mike Corbin's factory, located at 2360 Technology Parkway, Hollister, CA 95023 (the custom motorcycle seat maker) This competition will be held as a part of the annual Hollister Rally.

The distance for this motorcycle fuel economy contest will be 100-miles.
Top contenders at this competition will be Alan Smith, Terry Hershner ,Craig Vetter and yours truly. It looks like Mike Corbim's Sparrow may not be ready for this competition. My brother will be riding my Silveraero/aerotrunk project bike so we'll see how it does against the full streamliners.

It looks to be great event and a lot of fun, and I hope to see some Ninjetters there.

Wish me luck, GA

Thanks again for all the good wishes! They paid off today. I went 79.9 miles on .49 gallons of fuel for 162.4 mpg. Good for second best of the gasoline -powered motos. Alan used only .45 gallons and is al least the conventional fuel winner if not the overall champ. Three Zero electric motos competed and I know at least 2 finished so whoever went the distance for the least cost will be the overall winner. We had 3 streamliners, 2 partial streamlined motos , 3 electrics and other motos for a total of 24 riders. Itwas a great day!

interesting to see what the cost comparison of "modifying" the bikes to get better fuel economy. I would also calculate time in the equation also.

As in all competitions there is generally some correlation between the investment of money and time in the results. My primary competitors have invested relatively large amounts of money and a lot of time in their efforts and have been rewarded with winning results. Fred Hayes and Alan Smith are the only competitors so far to achieve multiple overall Vetter Challenges wins. Their efforts have shown very impressive results. I have been able to break through into the overall win column with a small amount of money spent and less time spent working on the moto but I was pretty lucky that day in San Luis Obispo. At most Challenges, I'm a contender but not a favorite to win.
If I was only interesting in saving money and a good return on my investment I would stick with an approach that I have pursued with my Siveraero/aerotrunk moto: Minimal $ and time to achieve over 100 mpg potential. At Hollister with my brother riding it it finished 3rd amongst the gas powered motos.

Vic, I think your sports has honestly much more to do with the 'Olympic Idea' (more than racing can and will ever have).
"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

@greenaero - Not sure if you've heard, but Craig has been in a serious accident on his streamliner. He hit a deer yesterday, and the injuries are not trivial. Still being kept unconscious/sedated to deal with the swelling of the brain. Head trauma, broken clavicle, many broken ribs, and perhaps a bit more. Doctors are optimistic, so please send healing thoughts.

Hi Hernan, Craig is still in the hospital and only his immediate family can visit so far. His injuries ( facial orbital fracture, broken ribs, vertebrae fracture ) are serious and Craig is no longer a young man and he is recovering slowly. Alan and I are very concerned about his riding future and can only pray for the best outcome.
We have looked into the details of his collision and feel that 2 factors may have added to the severity of Craig's injuries: an open -faced helmet and the stiffness of the windscreen imparting impact force to his body.
I've been redesigning my windscreen and plan to design in the ability to crumple if I'm in a frontal collision.

The extension and seriousness of the injuries compared to the speed of the collision amazed me.
That must have been a heavy deer jumping onto his path with a perfect timing.

Many thanks, Vic.
