No-Cut diode kit installed but now tail light fuse keeps blowing

I bought my ninja 2009 250r wrecked and have been working on it this winter. Everything has been going fine mechanically but when it came to replacing the blinkers (it only had one left after the wreck) I had to buy the diode kit and flash relay like so many of us have, but now every time I turn the key on the bike, the tail light fuse will immediately blow. Everything worked perfectly before the diode kit, and even the blinkers work properly after the diode was installed. I know there must be a short somewhere but it everything worked perfectly before the diode so I'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome !

Need some more details not present in your post.

1. I assume you installed LED turn signals?
2. Then you installed solid-state flasher relay to fix fast-flashing issue?
3. Then you installed diode kit to fix turn-signal indicator in cluster?

To troubleshoot, go in reverse order and remove mods until this fuse stops blowing. There's either incorrect wiring in diode kit (return it if short goes away after you remove kit), or you did something incorrect with wiring. Backing out in reverse order will find the problem.

Hey JacRyann, yes to all your questions. The short has to be in the diode I would think since the flash relay worked before I put the diode on. I don't know how it could be shorting though with every tab placed in the correct slot. The diode seemed to be in fine condition when I got it out of the packaging.

Diodes are easy to check. Many meters have a diode test setting, and the diode should pass current one way but not the other when you switch the meter leads.

Without a meter, you can test a diode with a low power 12v test lamp and a 12v battery. The diode should pass current one way and light the bulb, but not the other way.

Figured it out

In the previous owner's wreck, he lost the electrical component which attached to the rear brake and it was just dangling behind the wheel. It would make contact with the frame and blow the fuse. Diode ended up being fine along with all the other electrical components.

Very good... now on to the next smaller problem.

(whenever you fix something, the next smaller problem becomes obvious)

Good job on tracking that down!

And thank you for posting your resolution. A lot of posts shows problems, then poster disappears and we never know if our ideas helped or not. Or if the problem was ever resolved. making future searches lost in limbo!
