Wearing steel toe boots on a motorcycle would scare the **** out of me.... But it's definitely much better than the sneakers I see most people wear.
Ankle support and armor is the primary purpose of riding boots.

Is there something I don't know about a steel toe and the motorcycle? Why would it scare you so bad?

Just because of the steel toe or because I do not have the outside support for the ankle? I understand the ankle support from the right boots, but I got the impression that there might be some other hidden reason that I was not seeing. I guess it is a risk I am will to take untill I can get some true boots.

Is that really a risk you want to take? Dropping a 375lb bike on your ankle and breaking it when you can prevent that for less than $200? It's because there is no support for your ankel with those boots. You most likely have almost full range of motion in your ankle, a little push past that breaks bones.

Here is a thread started yesterday, by a guy in a similar situation to you, with some fantastic information.

Just the horror stories (not sure if they are true or hold ground) of people getting their toes chopped off by that steel plate curling in.

Trust me guys, I know what can happen when I go down. Like I said, it is just a risk I am willing to take untill I can afford to buy some boots. It is this or not ride. That is the last of it for me.

Both of our resident 16-year-olds are in the bottom-ranked for gear?! But you guys are still learning basic traffic defense! I felt totally naked hopping on Chris' bike the last couple times I was there. At least Nick isn't riding in traffic.

Gear up, guys!

It's sad really that the youngest (with the most life ahead of them) are taking the most risk by riding in traffic without gear.

But then again, I guess they feel they have more to prove. I am glad I didn't start riding at that age, I would have been the same way.

They had enough income to drop $3-5k on a bike, the $500 in gear should have been part of that equation.

I only paid $1500 for my bike 2 years ago. I have seen some of the pre-gens go for $1000 now.

But I do get what you are saying. I remember those days as they were not too far off for me. I did some crazy stuff that I would never do now.

Income is a huge factor. I just started a new career and don't have tons of cash up front to buy gear. I managed to get my helmet financed with my bike, and bought a jacket and gloves in cash. Parents bought me boots thankfully, but I still can't afford the riding suit I want..will have to risk 3-4 months of riding in jeans before I can get the suit. And younger people will probably take even more chances..theyd rather ride the bike they want without gear, than to ride something they dont want with full gear.

I have the perf version of that jacket and it comes in a size 38 minimum. I'm barely a size 36 and I would say it's pushing the limit. My GMX motion jacket fits better than the 824/826. I heard Rev'it and might have some stuff could fit with you, I'd check.

If insurance takes it out of your closet, no. If you retain it, yes. In fact, I'm awarding 5 bonus points for keeping a piece of gear as a trophy that died in the line of service.

59: Updated score for me, with bonus commentary. Have to post this now because I'm about to put a bunch of this up for sale and ruin my score.

1 - Vega Merge Boots (a gift, terrible purchase, need to sell these)
1 - Alpinestars Parlor (another gift, worst gear ever. Seriously wifey, don't buy me gear)
2 - BiLT Trackstar (surprisingly decent, very usable for commuter use)
2 - Tourmaster Solution Boots (my daily wear boots, 2 years of wear and better than ever, like an old friend)
3 - Cortech Latigo Boots (good value basic track protection)
1 - Shift Lowdown jeans (only ever wear with knee/shin guards, but kinda like these)
2 - Joe Rocket Pheonix mesh overpants (good example of buying cheap and not saving money, never really wore these)
3 - Cortech textile overpants (my backup pants, functional and well made)
3 - REV'IT Turbine textile pants (my favorite pants BY FAR)
1 - Bonus Brand Whore Points
3 - REV'IT Turbine textile jacket (my favorite jacket, bullet proof)
2 - Bonus armor upgrade
1 - Bonus Brand Whore Points
1 - Shift mesh gloves (a gift, wrong size, never wore)
1 - Joe Rocket Phoenix gloves (backup/loaner gloves for 2 years, recently replaced for wear, surprisingly better than their replacement A*s)
1 - Alpinestars SMX-2 (backup hot weather gloves, replacing Rockets, worn like 5 times, already starting to come apart, such a huge variance in quality of A* stuff)
4 - Held Airstream (max protection, great feel, worth every penny)
1 - Bonus Brand Whore Points
3 - Aerostich Elkskin Roper Guantlet (these are the top quality for low $. Super comfy, will wear forever)
1 - Bonus Brand Whore Points
2 - HJC IS-Max (backup helmet. Meh)
4 - Arai Vector (Super comfy, quiet, y u no have easy replace shield?)
1 - Bonus points for owning 2 extra face shields
1 - Bonus Brand Whore Points
3 - Teiz Mojave full suit (great hot weather gear at a great value. My usual commuter)
3 - Teiz Lombard full suit (Got for under $200, which is incredible value for protection. Tend not to wear it, preferring either the Mojave in hot weather or the Aerostich when I'm really gearing up. No fault of the suit.)
3 - Aerostich Roadcrafter full suit (best purchase I've ever made).
2 - Bonus for armor upgrade
1 - Bonus Brand Whore point
1 - Fieldsheer Iceberg Cooling Vest. (It works, good when it gets up over 95)
1 - Icon Field Armor knee/shin guards

Total - 59 points. Next purchase an actual high quality boot. Either an Aerostich/Sidi Combat Touring Light or a Daytona Trans Open.
