im about to clean my chain for the first time and was wondering if the front sprocket cover and chain cover bolts should be torque to spec or just until snug

I honestly don't torque those to spec. Just tighten them by feel.

The ones that I always tighten to the spec are axles, sprockets, brakes, oil drain, rear shock, triple clamp, shift lever (+ blue locktite) and engine mount bolts (yes they vibrate loose sometimes).

I am sure I forgot a few too.

Those and any bolts going into aluminum are better torqued to specs, since it is very easy to damage the threads or leave them loose.

That includes the spark plugs, although there is a difference between new and used washer.
