There is no worse sound in the world than a ninja 250 with a loud system.

No reason to change it unless you race and need to lose weight.

I'd say Finesse has all the experience.

my qualifications are significantly lacking.

are we opening this little wager up to both of the sexes?

and what is it women are compensating for when they ride with loud pipes? Or is this ALL just about penis envy?

Jumping in late on this thread but here's my opinion.

A muffler does nothing for performance, in fact without other alterations you could lose HP. Kawasaki engineers do know what they're doing so unless you're willing to begin and end with dyno runs every time you change something that "feel in the pants" might be something other than a performance gain. As an Iron Butt rider ever wonder why no one really has loud pipes on their bikes. Ever do 400 or 500 miles following a guy with non stock exhaust or ride a bike any decent distance 400 + miles and you'll soon be tired of that braspppppppppp very soon. JMO

It's not bad doing distance with a pipe. I was always under the assumption that IBR riders usually were quiet because they're known to be a little extra legal and didn't want to raise hell with the local law enforcement.

While I disagree with you, thank you for upholding the respect for the engineer

about the "kawi engineers know what they're doing"..... motorcycles have to pass certain specs on noise, emission control, etc. in order to be sold in the USA. manu's also try to make MPG ratings look better depending on model types. engineers are building to fit those specs. those specs for 99% of motorcycles are not "get all the power at all the costs". they are "pass requirements and look good at a lower cost so we can sell it and make money on it". in most of the states that don't hate motorcyclists, there is no yearly inspection. which means the go-to power mod for most is generally the exhaust. a new pipe and some mild jetting nonsense, even with only suggested jets and not properly tuned jets will probably get you at least a mild power boost.

i donno if 500 miles is considered long distance.... i dont think it is. but anyway i've done plenty of stints longer than that with my ridiculous exhaust, next to other ridiculous exhausts. if you wear proper ear protection its no big thang. the wind makes more noise than an exhaust does anyway.

Hey to each his own. If You don't mind riding 400 hundred miles with loud pipes go for it but that's not for me.

Consider it's a 250..I have a K&N air filter, needles shimmed and carbs synch'd and adjusted and valves set. The bike performs as well as a 250 can .

I've been through the pipes and cans and just about everything else in my 64 years and in my experience ( I said my experience) unless you have access to a dyno and check baseline then check each time you change something your not going to have accurate information on whether or not the money you invested is yielding any power gains whether significant or not.

I have a friend Dr. Yeager who has done some mods like K&N filter, jets, and a pipe with a quiet core and he has some data to show he's picked up 2 horsepower. That's significant but for the investment I wouldn't do it.

Good conversation plenty of opinions...pick one and go with it.

Because I like it when people make fun of my Ninja for sounding like a sewing machine and then I tell them I rode this sewing machine from Canada to Florida and they stop making fun of it.

Main reason is because I don't want to spend money when I don't have to. I plan on getting a MUCH louder horn though. The Ninjette's honk is pathetic and cute... not angry at all!

HAHAHAA!!! Nope, it's quieter and just..... laughable. Who would take it seriously? They will be like "awww so cute". No. I want an air horn than is so terrifying that all drivers will regret the day they drove carelessly around me! :P

I replaced my horn with this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...rch_detailpage

It's a direct swap and it's MUCH louder. People used to continue merging into my lane wondering what that sound was, now they react quite appropriately.

I agree with most of what your trying to convy. A pipe for the sake of a pipe means nothing. But take the most known example for the 250, the Area P. I gained just over 4 HP with the pipe jet and filter. No loss at any point in the rpm. Its not much louder than stock and really wakes the bike up over 9k rpm. They did over 50 dyno pulls while developing it to make the best exhaust possible, and i love it.

Yes that is exactly what I'm trying to convey. To do it just so the bike is loud is sophomoric. To do it where you have attended to several systems so that all are in balance and performing where you actually lose unsprung weight and gain HP now that's the deal. I applaud you because you found a way to get it done and keep the bike relatively quiet.

I have no idea how loud my exhaust is or what it sounds like to others. When I am riding I don't think it sounds very loud, but if I rev it while it is stationary and I am not wearing a helmet it sounds pretty loud....and AWESOME

To each his own, but loud pipes for the sake of being loud is disturbing others peace. I am looking forward to quiet peaceful rides on an electric bike with just the sound of a 100 mph wind past my helmet.

With a slip on, it gets annoying at times on long freeway rides. But then again the wind noise gets just as annoying. I use earplugs.

The only downside (for me) is that I can't have a conversation with my buddy at traffic lights without screaming at each other.

90% of the bikes in my area are Harley's and other cruisers, mostly Harley's with uber loud pipes, my little n250 with it's aftermarket exhaust is but a whisper amongst the thunder

It's a direct swap and it's MUCH louder. People used to continue merging into my lane wondering what that sound was, now they react quite appropriately.

JMO
Others have addressed this, but let me offer this:

The stock ninjette dyno graph tends to fall off heavily after 9K or so (I forget the exact region), which is the entire upper register of the rev range. On any other bike, this wouldn't be a problem, however, my 250 sees redline on a regular basis, and simply for the health of the exhaust valves, a slip-on can produce reasonable gains. Of course, as you have mentioned, the rest of the system will have to be balanced again...

Not trying to

I think I'll let our resident engineer @choneofakind answer that

I rode my honda xr50 last night with A STOCK PIPE and some fuddy duddy came out of his house and told me I have no business keeping people awake. I was in a county park on a small strip of paved driveway for their summer camp facility at 11.30pm maybe 200ft from the nearest house. practicing wheelies

so the argument for not bothering people with an aftermarket pipe is now invalid
