first purchase and ride yesterday

An '06 250R in red w/5K miles from CL with some dents and scratches already, since I'm the 3rd owner / learner. All went slowly and well, and I'm queued up for an MSF class. My dad kept "trash talking" my 250cc hunt, but after he rode the bike to my house for me, he swaggered in with a smile on his face, so I guess he approved, haha. I looked at the new Ninja 300, but the stalling issue (apparently faulty ECUs?) and snap-on fairings wiggling off scared me away. Does the '06 N250 need a steering bearing replacement like the '13 N300 also?

Welcome Jay!

Sweet lookin' pregen you got there. The stem bearings do not need to be replaced unless they wear out.

MSF riding day 1 of 2 was uneventful -- coach said our class was really easy. I'm surprised someone would sign up to learn riding a motorcycle, not knowing how to drive a stick-shift car first. I need to change helmets asap -- current one is smashing just the right cheek into my teeth, and now the tissue is slightly ripped up and painful. Next size up was way too wobbly on my head though, so it's a brand change I guess.

Glad it's going well. Yes, getting a helmet that fits correctly and is comfortable is key.

Many brands make many different helmets, some are oval shaped, some are round, its weird.

Try the brand HJC, those work well for most people I know.

Despite it being pricey, I personally went with a Shoei because I like knowing my noggin is safe.

Here, this may help. http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle-helmet-guide

MSF day 2 kicked my butt. I think I was the weakest double u-turn box rider out there. I just could not nail it on day two, even though I did it right the first time on day one. Everybody passed though, nobody was having massive issues or anything. I need some quality slow speed time. It was a little frustrating because there's 12 people and 1 box, so we each spent a lot of time waiting. There was plenty of room for 4 boxes, one in each corner of the lot. I think the training lot is chained off normally (or filled with cars M-F for college), so I have to devise my own box in a parking lot somewhere ...

The only thing the FZ6R has on the baby Ninjette is engine and a dash clock (ha!). The Fizzer is heavy (and top-heavy at that), and the seat sucks (holy sh*t snacks). They both get about 50 mpg just cruising around, amusingly. Gonna try lowering kit + Corbin seat. I can deal with the weight, but I hesitate to sell the Ninja until I know the new seat makes things a lot better. The stock seat is apparently renowned for no-padding hot spots. Rode 165 miles yesterday, and my rear still hurts, even with pain killer. My first 240 mile trip on the Ninja wasn't heavenly per se, but it didn't hurt like this!

Except for the whp, the little Ninja is so easy to love. The FZ6R is more sporty and stiff and taller and heavy. It sort of counters the luxury of the increased power, maybe a bit of a side-grade in my book as it stands now. If the lowering link + Corbin doesn't make the seating manageable, it might be a short affair. I was in pain the next day after an extended ride from the previous day. The stock seat is like sitting on plywood after a couple hours.

Sold the FZ6R, and still have the Ninja 250. Problem w/6R imho, it's top heavy. Nice on freeway though.

But I pick up an R3 on Saturday! R3 feels way more Ninjette to me, than the latest Ninja 300 does, for whatever reason.

edit: Wow, that 1st and 2nd gear acceleration on the R3.
